“It was one of your favorite songs,” Savannah counters without missing a beat. “Don’t even try to deny it. I’ve heard you humming to it so many times in the past.”

My cheeks heat in embarrassment.

Chewing at my lip, I shift my attention to rearranging the coffee station.

Savannah was right. It was one of my favorite songs. A song that the last time I heard it, I was with Miguel. Hearing it yesterday, after everything that had happened these past fewdays, triggered something in me, and I just couldn’t stand to listen to it. I was afraid if I did, I was going to break and start crying, and I couldn’t do that. I couldn’t have people looking at me like I was crazy.

They’re doing it anyway.

I wasn’t dumb. I could feel their curious stares and hear their soft whispers. They tried acting inconspicuously, but the people of Bluebonnet wouldn’t understand what inconspicuous meant, even if it bit them in the ass.

“Did you and Miguel have a fight again?”

Kate’s question startles me out of my thoughts, and I almost drop the bottle with vanilla spice. “No…”

“Because if you did, I’m sure you guys will make up,” Kate continues without missing a beat. “It’s what you two do. You fight, and then you ma—”

“We didn’t have a fight,” I shout, putting the bowl down on the counter with more force than necessary, the loud bang drawing the attention of people around me.

Shit.

Closing my eyes, I let out a soft breath, trying to rein in my emotions. Only when I’m sure I have myself under control and know my voice won’t break, do I admit softly, “Miguel left.”

The heavy silence stretches between us as the girls stare at me, their mouths agape, matching shocked expressions on their faces.

At least it’s out.

“What do you mean he left?” Kate’s the first to break the quiet. “When?”

“Just like I said, he left.” I shrug, feeling the tightness of my shoulders. I look away, unable to stand Kate’s scrutinizing stare. “A few days ago.”

“A few…” her voice hitches, and I can hear her suck in a sharp breath. “He left? Without saying a word? He just up and left?”

“Hey, are you okay?”

At Savannah’s soft question, I turn around to find Kate’s cheeks red, her lips pressed in a tight line.

“What I am islivid. I swear I’d kill him if he were here.” She curls her fingers into a fist and pounds it against the counter, almost knocking her coffee cup over in the process. Her blazing gaze turns toward me. “How can you be so calm? What’s going to happen with you guys now that he’s gone?”

“Nothing.”

Kate’s eyes narrow. “What do you mean, nothing?”

“Exactly that, nothing.”

“But you guys were together.” I open my mouth, but she gives me a warning glare. “Don’t you even try to deny it, missy. I know you better than you give me credit for, and I know you guys were hooking up again. In reality, I was surprised it took you that long to get back together in the first place…”

I fist my fingers, feeling the bite of the nails as they sink into my skin. “We were never together, Kate.”

Kate is on a roll, and there is no stopping her now, but the more she talks, the more my anxiety grows.

“You guys were destined to be together. I’ve known it since the very first time I saw you, and I had a feeling you’d figure things out if you just stopped for long enough totalk, but—”

“We’re not you and Emmett!” I yell, feeling the tears prickle my eyelids.

I needed her to stop, and I needed it now. I was so close to breaking, and if she mentioned him one more time, I’d…

“We’re not you two. We’ll never be you guys. I’m so happy you’re married and living your best life. I truly am. But I need you to understand this isn’t my life. It never will be. We nevergot back together, and we never will. His life is in Austin, where he’s working his dream job, and I’m here.”
