“Next time you lose something, you’re getting it yourself.” With that, he turns around to leave.

“Cha—” I try to warn him, but it’s already too late.

In his hurry, he bumps into Rose. I watch the surprise flash on both their faces at the collision. Rose stumbles back, but before I can blink, Chase’s hands are on her arms, steadying her. Rose’s lips part, her hand flying to her chest.

“Oh, my God, I’m so sorry.”

Chase’s breathing hard as he just stares at her for a heartbeat.

Rose tilts her head to the side, her hand reaching for his. “Are you okay?”

Chase’s brows pull together as he stares at her mouth, trying to figure out what she asked him.

Then Kyle appears from behind her, only to come to a sudden stop when he notices Chase and Shadow. I watch the color leave his face, his eyes turning into saucers as he takes a step back, clinging to Rose’s legs.

Rose places her hand on Kyle’s shoulder reassuringly.

Hurt flashes on my brother’s face for a split second before it’s gone. “Sorry.” He moves to the side, and Shadow follows,Kyle’s eyes keeping track of their movements as they enter the shop.

“It’s fine. Kyle just isn’t used to such big dogs.”

Chase nods dismissively, his gaze darting to me. “I’ll see you at home.”

Neither of us gets a chance to answer before he all but runs for the door.

“Did I do something wrong?” Rose asks, rubbing at her arm.

“No,” I shake my head, turning my attention to her. “Chase is just being… Chase.” It was the best way I could explain my brother without giving away his secrets.

Letting out a sigh, I crouch down and wave at Kyle before signing, “Cupcake?”

He nods eagerly, peeking from behind Rose.

I wave him over. “Come with me.”

Straightening, I catch sight of Rose looking over her shoulder, nervously nibbling at her lip. I remember the interaction I’d caught before Chase came over.

“You okay?”

Rose turns toward me, shaking her head. “Yeah, of course.” She plasters a smile on her face. “Everything is perfect.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-SIX

MIGUEL

“You think you’re the man?” Becky flashes me a smile, her hands gripping the ball tightly to her chest.

I pretend to go for her, but she moves to the right and slips out of my reach, rushing for our makeshift end zone with me jogging after her. I put in just enough effort so the guys wouldn’t bitch about it, but not enough to catch her.

“This is the best you can do, Mr. Hotshot Football Player?” she asks as she twirls that sweet ass in a celebratory dance.

I speed up, my arms wrapping around her and lifting her over my shoulder.

“Miguel!”

“Fernandez!” Coach yells, breaking me out of my thoughts just in time to see yet another player get past my defenses and into the end zone. “Where the hell is your head at?! Because it sure ain’t in this game!”

Shit.
