But what if we did?

Just the thought has my heart racing.

Grazing my teeth against my lower lip, I force myself to uncurl my fingers. I brush them against the side of my leg before pulling out my phone and dialing a familiar number. The beeping seems to go on for hours before the call finally connects.

“I need your help.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

MIGUEL

“Fucking hell,” I yell as the whistle blows.

The opposing team just moved an additional twenty yards before Walker managed to bring him down. Meaning if something didn’t change and quickly, they would score another touchdown, which would give them a healthy advantage over us, and the clock was running out.

“What’s wrong, Fernandez?” Gregory flashes me his teeth, menace shining in his eyes. “Sucks to be eating grass all night long, doesn’t it?”

“Fu—”

Walker bumps my shoulder with his, pushing me away. “Ignore him. He’s just trying to rile you up.”

I knew that, but I hated myself more for giving him a reason to do it.

This whole game was a shitshow, and I couldn’t stop thinking it was my fault. My head wasn’t in the game like it should be, and my teammates were depending on me to deliver.

As if he can read my mind, Blake grabs the back of my neck, bringing us closer. “Get your head in the game. Right now, nothing else matters, just you and stopping those guys on the other side of the line with whatever means necessary.Got it?”

I nod, gritting my teeth.

“Good,” Walker mutters, slapping me on the back of the head before we get to our positions.

I look toward the stands at the mass of people. Usually, I avoided glancing at the crowd, but tonight, my parents were in the stands along with Emmett and Kate.

So much for showing them this was the right career choice for me.

My eyes take in the family section out in the stands until they land on the familiar faces. They’re standing on their feet like the rest of the stadium, waiting to see how this game was going to unfold.

If we can intercept the ball and run it into the end zone, the game will be tied, which would leave more than enough time for our offense to score a winning touchdown.

I’m about to look away when a flash of red catches my attention.

What…

My heart is beating a mile a minute as my brain tries to process what I just saw, and before I can do a double-take, Big J pushes me from behind.

I get in my position, bending forward. Stupid Gregory is muttering something, but I can’t hear it from the buzzing in my ears.

It couldn’t be her.

Seriously, how long will I let this go on? Now I was starting to see her in the freaking stands between sixty thousand fans, which was crazy. What would she be doing here when she was the one who told me to leave?

Walker was right. It was time to stop this shit and get my life in order. One thing at a time.

Win this fucking game.

And then, go back to Bluebonnet and get Rebecca back.

So, what if she told me to go away without saying goodbye? What if she ignored my texts? She won’t be able to avoid me once I’m knocking on her door.
