With nothing else to do, Rebecca slips from behind the counter and starts cleaning off a few tables. I watch her work, doing her best to avoid me.

Deciding to call it quits, I turn off my laptop and put it into my backpack. Throwing it over my shoulder, I get to my feet just as she’s passing by my table.

“Can we talk?” I ask, running my fingers through my hair.

She pretends like she doesn’t hear me, but this time around, there is almost no audience to see us clashing heads together, so I wasn’t about to let it go that easily.

“You know I’m Emmett’s best man,” I say as I chase after her. “You can’t avoid me forever.”

“I can damn sure try my best,” she mutters under her breath.

“I heard that.”

She glares over her shoulder. “I wasn’t trying to be quiet.”

“Seriously? Is this how it’s going to be?”

Like, how stubborn can one person be?

“I already told you we’ve said everything that needed to be said. I don’t s—”

“Did we say it before or after you turned your back on me and walked away?” I grit between clenched teeth. I grab her hand, tugging her to me. She collides into my chest, her lips parting as she sucks in a breath, those hazel eyes widening in surprise as a jolt of electricity goes through me.

Six years ago

“Rebecca!” I yell as I run after her, pushing the tree branches out of my way. I can feel one dig into my skin, and I know it’ll leave a gash, but I couldn’t care less about it.

The only thing that mattered was the painful look in Rebecca’s eyes and that I was the one who put it there. Now she was running away, and my heart was beating so fast I could swear it would jump out of my chest.

“Fuck! Rebecca, just wait.”

“Leave me alone, Miguel,” she shouts back but doesn’t bother to slow down.

“I’m not leaving you here.”

I finally catch a flash of red in the moonlight.

There.

Pushing myself harder, I start catching up to her until myfingers wrap around her wrist, and I tug her to me. Rebecca collides into my chest, and I wrap my arms around her.

“Let me go, Miguel,” she protests, trying to struggle out of my hold.

She’s wiggling in my arms, her body rubbing against mine as she turns around, her palms pressing against my chest. Where earlier there was sadness, now there is anger, and I can feel that grip around my heart loosen slightly. Angry Rebecca, I could deal with.

“I’m not letting you run away.”

She jabs her finger into my chest. “Let me go, or I’m going to scream.”

I grab her hands in mine to stop her from poking me. “As if anybody will hear you so far out in the woods.”

Her nostrils flare as she inhales deeply, tugging her hands back.

“I’m not joking, Miguel.”

I shrug my shoulders, knowing it’ll only piss her off further. “Go ahead, I dare you.”

I don’t even get to finish before she starts to open her mouth, but before she can utter a word, I pull her closer to me, my mouth crashing against hers.
