My gaze zeroes in on Rebecca’s back. On the taut line of her shoulders. The goosebumps spread over her skin. The way themoonlight makes the red in her hair seem brighter and more vibrant making me want to bury my head in the crook of her neck.

Would she still smell the same?

Like roses and sugar and home?

Because that’s what she always was for me.

Home.

Not this town, or my family, or even football.

Her.

As if she could feel my eyes on her, she turned around, those hazel eyes meeting mine. “I’m just so tired,” she whispers softly, tears shining in her eyes. “So damn tired. Watching her like this is chipping away at the pieces of my soul, and I’m not sure how much more I can take. How many more people do I have to lose before it’ll be enough?”

The raw pain in her voice is killing me.

I hate this for her. I knew how much she cherished her family. It destroyed her when her dad died, and then her brother joined the army, and now this.

What about you?A little voice at the back of my head taunts me.You left her too.

Only I didn’t. If it was up to me, I would have never let her walk away. But she made the call. She was the one who walked away.

Yet, you didn’t try to stop her.

One tear slides down her cheek.

“Rebecca,” I rasp, taking a step closer.

Her name, a whisper, and a plea.

I cup her cheek, brushing away the tear, her gaze holding mine hostage. Tonight, her eyes seem more green than brown. Her lips part, her tongue darting out to slide over her lower lip.

For a while, neither of us says anything. We just look at one another. It’s so familiar, all of this, and yet sodifferent.

Something flashes in her irises. I suck in a breath as my thumb rubs over her cheek, brushing the last of the tears away. My fingers slide to her nape, twining between the silky strands of her hair.

I’m not sure who’s the one who makes the first move. The only thing I know is that her body is brushing against mine. Her hand on my chest. My head bends down. Her warm breath touches my skin. And then her mouth is on mine. Or mine is on hers.

I don’t even care.

All I know is that we’re kissing. My lips slip over hers, refamiliarizing myself with the shape of her mouth, even though there is no need for it.

She fits against me perfectly, just like she did when we were seventeen. My grip on her hair tightens as I tilt her head. Her lips part on a soft moan as my tongue slips into her mouth.

Andfuck. She tastes the same, too. Like the sweetest of addictions and the addict I am, I can’t get enough of her.

“Red…” Groaning, my free hand lands on her hip, fingers digging into her skin as I pull her closer to me.

All those luscious curves press against my chest, her body molding to mine as her hands wrap around my neck, and we deepen the kiss. The last few years have been erased with a swipe of our tongues.

She nips at my lower lip, her hand sliding up and down my back, sending shivers through my spine and rock my core. My dick is painfully hard as it nestles against her lower belly, my knee slipping between her thighs as I press her against the railing. I take control, deepening the kiss.

Her fingers slip under the hem of my shirt, dancing over the muscles of my back. I can feel her heat against my knee as she rubs against it, seeking friction…

The sound of the engine pulls me out of the haze that’sRebecca Williams. My eyes snap open just as the truck comes into view, the bright headlights blinding me.

“Fuck,” I mutter, squeezing my eyes shut as I pull Rebecca closer to me, making sure she’s covered from the view of whoever just came here.
