“Yeah, I have to drive to my parent’s place.”

The last thing I needed was to go home smelling of alcohol.

“So what’s new around here?” I ask, spinning around in my seat. “You married?”

“Nah, but there is a girl over in Merrywill. We’ve been seeing each other for a few months.”

“That’s good, man.”

My eyes scan the space, taking everybody in. I vaguely remember some guys that worked on the ranch, and I’m pretty sure that’s old Mr. Lopez sitting there in the corner.

“Not as good as the dating pool is in Austin, I’m sure.”

“It’s—”

The words die on my lips when my eyes connect to a familiar pair of hazel eyes, and it’s like I’ve been run down by a train.

All the air is sucked out of my lungs, the noises turning into a dull murmur.

I’m not sure why I’m so surprised.

I knew she was still here. It was the main reason why we could never work out. I had to leave, and she insisted she had to stay.

I knew I’d have to see her sooner rather than later, but I never imagined it’d be this soon.

But with my luck, is it really surprising?

I just stare at her, completely transfixed.

Three years.

It’s been three years since I’ve laid my eyes on her.

It was the day she walked away from me. The day she didn’t give me a chance to explain. No, she condemned me, like every other person in my life has.

It hurt.

It hurt so fucking much.

She was supposed to be different.

She was supposed to be mine.

And in the end, she was just like everybody else.

My throat works as I swallow the bitter taste left on my tongue and allow myself to take her in.

She looks the same but, at the same time, different. More mature.

All that gorgeous auburn hair is falling down her back in loose waves. I watch it sway as she tilts her head to the side and tells something to an unfamiliar blonde woman sitting opposite her before she turns to the guy next to her and smiles at the dude.

Jealousy, hot and heavy, fills my chest. I tighten my fingers into a fist, feeling my nails dig into my palms.

The guy is sitting in a dark corner, so I can’t see his face. Who’s he to her? A boyfriend? Lover? Husband?

Just thinking about it makes my stomach twist in knots.

It doesn’t matter. She’s not yours;I try to reason with myself.Hasn’t been for a while.
