She shakes her head. “It doesn’t even matter. You can go on your way. I’m fine here.”

“You didn’t look fine just a moment ago. What’s going on with your truck?”

“It won’t start, but like I said, it’s fi—”

Before she can finish, I gently move her out of my way and pull out my phone. Turning on the flashlight, I illuminate the interior of the hood.

“Did you leave any of the lights on?”

The silence stretches as I poke around the engine, trying to figure out what’s going on, but it’s too damn dark for me to see anything properly, even with the flashlight on.

Why the hell does she park here anyway? The side alley was in total darkness, with no light in sight. It could be dangerous.

When I look up to point that out, I find Rebecca glaring at me, her arms crossed over her chest. “Did I leave my lights on? Who do you take me for, Fernandez? A freaking fool?”

“It was just a question, Red. I think it could be your batteryor your alternator. Did the car make any noise when you tried turning it on?”

“Nothing. Seriously, it’s fine. Just leave it. I’ll call the mechanic tomorrow so they can come and give it a look. You can go. It’s nothing I haven’t done a hundred times before myself.”

The way she brushes me off so easily annoys me to no end, but I don’t let her see it. Instead, I cross my arms over my chest.

“And how did you plan to get back home?”

“I…” My question clearly catches her off guard because it takes her a moment to answer. “I’ll just call my brother.”

My jaw clenches in irritation. Because seriously, how stubborn can she be?

“And you’ll wait for him to drive all the way back from your place and sit here in the dark?”

“Yes. I don’t see what the issue is.”

“The issue is that it’s late, and it’s pitch black here. Why didn’t you install a light if you’re parking here every day?”

I don’t need light to see the anger flashing in Rebecca’s irises. Her fingers curl into a fist as she glares at me.

“This is Bluebonnet, not Austin. Besides, I don’t remember asking for your opinion.”

“Well, I’m giving it to you anyway. This might be Bluebonnet, but it doesn’t make it safe. There are bad people everywhere.”

Her chin lifts up a notch. “Yeah, I learned the hard way that there were bad people everywhere. Including where you least expected to find them.”

So we were back at it again.

I suck in a long breath, biting my tongue so I don’t say something I’m going to regret.

“I’ll call Chase.”

Rebecca uncurls her arms and unlocks her phone. I wait as she pulls out her brother’s contact and presses the call button. Ican hear the phone ring, but it goes straight to voicemail. She tries again, but the result is the same. Before she can try one more time, I grab her hand.

“Just let me drive you home,” I whisper softly. “It’s late, and I’m going there anyway.”

Her tongue darts out, sliding over her lower lip. I watch that little movement as she weighs her options, and I can see the moment in which she finally gives in.

“Fine, but only because I’m getting worried. Chase is home alone with Mom, and I don’t want to wait for Emmett to get here.”

Because God forbid, I’d think she was doing this to willingly be in my proximity.

“Whatever you wanna tell yourself, Red.”
