Oh, I had just the idea of what they were busy with.

How is this my life?

This can’t be real. It can’t be happening. Miguel wouldn’t do that to me.

But he did.

There is no denying it.

This half-naked girl standing in his doorway is proof I haven’t been imagining things these past few weeks.

No, Miguel is cheating on me.

“Are you mute or something?” the girl barks out.

Bile rises, burning my throat.

“I… No,” I shake my head, which only makes the nausea worse.

You’ll not throw up in front of this girl.

My fingers are clenched into a fist so tight I can feel my nails bite into my skin. “I have the wrong room, so—”

“Who was knocking, Marie?” Miguel’s gruff voice comes from inside the room.

Shit.

I take a step back, trying to get the hell out of there, but I’m already too late.

Miguel’s gaze finds mine over her shoulder, and I clearly see the moment the realization of what had happened hits him.

“Rebecca? What are you doing here?”

Something inside my chest shatters at the sound of his voice, gentle and caring.

Then why the hell did he do this to me? To us?

Tears blur my vision. With a soft shake of my head, I turnand storm out of the room. I can hear Miguel call my name, but I don’t slow down. I take two steps at a time, needing to get away.

Between trying to run as fast as I can and tears gathering in my eyelids, I stumble over the last step. Cursing, I trip forward and bump into a woman, almost falling on my nose, but I steady myself at the very last second.

“Slow down!” she yells after me, but I’m already running toward the door.

Just a little bit longer.

I try to pull my keys out of my bag, but of course, this is the moment when I can’t find them.

“Becky! Wait.”

The sound of Miguel’s voice has goosebumps rising on my skin. The tears that I’ve tried to hold at bay come rushing out, and this time, there is no stopping them.

“Dammit, Rebecca!”

Calloused fingers grab my upper arm and turn me around until I’m facing Miguel. He’s breathing hard, his clothes rumpled, and his hair messy. Seeing him like that breaks my heart all over again.

“Let me go,” I whisper, trying to tug my arm out of his hold.

“I’m not letting you go until we talk.”
