“We,” Theo repeated with a decisive nod, picking up his cup and draining the remains of the now cool, sickly sweet drink. “Finish your food.”

Daniel looked at him with an odd, yet fond, expression. Theo ignored the flutter of his heart and tackled the rest of the pastries. When they were finished, he gathered their cups and plates and carried them to the small receptacle for trash. He walked away, knowing Daniel would follow.

“So…” Daniel drawled, “what are you going to do about Troy?”

“I’m going to talk to my brothers-in-arms.”

“Tonight?”

Theo stopped and waited for Daniel to realize and come back to him. “It’s late. They are probably all sleeping, and by the time they awaken, I’ll have left.”

“Oh.” Daniel’s shoulders slumped, crestfallen lips pursing and pressing, but no words were spoken. Theo waited him out. “I thought… that maybe… maybe you were going to help me today.”

“I cannot. You must go on as if nothing has changed. In the evening, return to Haven, and I will meet you there.”

Daniel turned away, dejection a storm cloud over his head.

The feeling of a sharp pinch to Theo’s side jerked him to move, to speak. To tell Daniel the truth. “Wait.”

Daniel stopped and glanced over his shoulder at Theo. “What?”

“Daylight requires that I return home, but I’ll ask if I can send someone to help you. It’s the best I can do.”

“Your best would be staying here with me,” Daniel scoffed.

Theo closed the distance between them, laid his hands on Daniel’s shoulders, and squeezed before sliding them upward to cup Daniel’s neck. “I agree, but when we angels are blessed with Adonai’s gift, we must work to earn it.”

“What? That makes no sense.” Daniel’s indignant reply warmed Theo.

“My King gives us only the night hours to earn the love of the one He has chosen to be ours.”

“I see.”

But clearly, Daniel did not. “Daniel, He makes the rules. Only some can be bent or broken.”

“And staying during the day isn’t one of them?”

“Unfortunately, no. I’ll return at sundown. I will meet you wherever you are.”

“Promise?”

Thelial felt the dawn’s pull. He looked down at his hand, his already slightly transparent hand. Glancing around showed they were alone in the hallway. Theo quickly moved into Daniel’s space and stole a chaste kiss.

“Promise,” he whispered as Heaven’s light filled his view.

“Thelial?”

Thelial opened his eyes. “Here I am, my king.”

Monday: Sunrise

Daniel

Daniel returned to his empty, lonely apartment. He hated it. Loathed it enough that he hadn’t even bothered to decorate. Bare walls. Muted colors. Basic white dishes, mugs, and generic silverware from one of those big-box stores. Which one? Who cares? The sole consolation he made to color was the bright red pillows on the navy blue couch. It’d come that way.

He crashed onto it face first, more tired than he thought. His body, at least. His mind? Not so much.

Daniel wanted to accept whatever help God gave him, but he’d denied Him for so long, it didn’t seem right. Fuck, he’d denied God even existed for the first couple of years after his parents’ deaths. He didn’t deserve such a gift. Yet, he wanted… badly.
