“No. You have a good day, Dan, and I’ll see you tonight.”

“Yes, sir,” Daniel said as he stood. He was halfway out the door when Troy stopped him.

“Dan.”

“Sir?”

“Watch your back.”

“Sir?” Alarm raced through Daniel.

“Marydoeshave protection. They may seek reparations.”

Oh. Well…He didn’t have to worry about retaliation from the angels, but for appearances’ sake, Daniel sucked in a breath and faked nervousness by widening his eyes and clenching his hands into fists. “What kind of reparations?”

Troy shrugged. “I hear they’re pretty good with a sword.”

Daniel scoffed. “A sword? That’s sort of old-fashioned, isn’t it?” He didn’t bother to wait for a reply, continuing to laugh as he stepped onto the elevator. Ginny stepped in as well. Once the doors closed, he collapsed against the wall, requiring its solid presence to hold him upright.

“Holy shit,” he murmured, his heart pounding. He’d been sure Troy had known when he called Daniel back. Exhaustion pulled at his muscles, and he yawned.

“Naptime, Daniel?” Ginny quipped as the doors opened on the ground floor.

“You know it. Take care, Gin.” He headed for home, his bed calling his name.

Thelial

Sy sauntered into Thelial’s room, where he’d been reclining on his bed. “I’ve got some new information.”

Thelial sat up. “I’m listening.”

“Daniel told Ari and Judah about Troian’s fight club. Your mate will be working there tonight collecting entrance fees.”

“A fight club… Do you think…?”

Sy shrugged. “Not the best idea, but not the worst, either. It would give you an in with Troian and allow you to keep an eye on Daniel.”

“Who—”

“John,” they both said.

Thelial stood. “I’ll go talk to him now.”

????

“John, I need your help.”

John turned around, his robes swinging gracefully with the movement. “My help? Are you sure? Usually, everyone goes to Simon or Eleazar when they need assistance.”

Thelial’s heart hurt for theAlufof God’s Army. How was it that anyone missed the poise and confidence John had? This man—this angel—was born to lead. Yet, he’d always been relegated to second-in-command under his elder brother, Judah. Thus, here he was, surprised when someone actually asked for his help specifically.

“Maybe, but in this case, you’re the best.”

“The best? At what?”

“Hand-to-hand fighting and mixed martial arts. I’ve seen you get past a demon’s defenses and take them down quickly. I want to learn how to do that.”

“What for?” John crossed his arms, putting up a defensive front. “It’s not like you’ll be here much longer. Adonai has already chosen someone for you. In less than a week, you’ll be leaving us and living there… with him.”
