Theo smirked. “What can I say? I love this city. ‘America’s Playground.’ Plus, all my friends are here.”

“No family?” Those dark eyes grew bigger. “Sorry. I didn’t mean to ask such a personal question. I’m keeping you from your work… You are working, right?” Daniel licked his lips again as his gaze traveled from Theo’s face downward.

“No worries. My name’s Theo, and yes, I’m working. Holler if you need a refill.”

“Daniel.” Daniel stuck out his hand, and Theo took it in a firm grip. “Nice to finally meet you, Theo.”

“Likewise.” Theo reluctantly released Daniel, letting their digits slide across each other as Daniel pulled his hand away. “I’ll be back,” he mouthed before turning to wait on a couple of twentysomethings clamoring for tequila shots and chasers.

In between filling orders, Theo noticed Daniel pull out his phone and grimace at whatever he read on the screen. He tried to get over there, but a ridiculously drunk bachelorette and her bridal party slammed into the counter and stole his attention. By the time he got a bouncer to escort her and her friends out of the club, Daniel was gone.

“Darn it,” he swore, stumbling back from the bar.

Con caught his shoulder hard, keeping him from running into the computerized cash register. “Is everything okay? You’ve never stayed here this long before.”

“Daniel… Fuck.” Theo ran his hands into his hair and pulled, frustrated that the man had already slipped through his fingers.

“Daniel?” Con’s eyes narrowed and then widened. “Holy shit? Really?” Not waiting for confirmation, Con pushed Theo through the door to the backroom.

Theo’s ears rang in the muffled interior room of the bar, but it didn’t stop him from noticing how Con wouldn’t meet his gaze as he shuffled his feet.

“What do you know about Daniel?” he asked when Con didn’t speak quickly enough for him.

“This one seems… a lot more personal.”

“This one what?” Theo squinted at Con.

“This mission, assignment, whatever you angels call it.”

Theo rocked a step back. “I’m sorry, what? An angelic mission?”

Con chuckled. “Don’t play dumb with me. I know. Leo was the one who helped me and my wife.”

“He was?” What the ever-loving…. “I did not know this.”How could you not tell me?he shot heavenward.

Need to know basis, came back. You didn’t need to know.

Only he would have a King with a crazy sense of humor.

You love me anyway…

Yes. Yes, he did.

“Obviously,” Con answered, momentarily stunning Theo. He was sure Con couldn’t hear him speak with Adonai, but then realized it was just a continuation of their conversation. “Leo told me not to tell you. He said you didn’t need to know.”

Theo just barely kept himself from rolling his eyes. Lord save him from military geniuses.

No saving necessary.

Theo snuffled his mirth, pressing his lips together to keep any sound from escaping. Once he had himself under control, he asked what had happened.

“Hostage situation in Vegas. Tina couldn’t stay there anymore, so we transferred here. Leo showed up again about a year later and asked for my help and my silence.”

“Leo’s a good man.”

“Indeed, but that doesn’t answer my question about you.”

No. No, it did not. Theo guessed it didn’t matter, seeing as Con already knew he was an angel. “Daniel is my mission, and while I know the reason I was chosen to help him, I’m not exactly sure of all the details of how to help. I do know that he seekstru’va, redemption.”
