Theo winced as he accepted Troy’s approval, but shook his head. “I need some time to rest up, sir.”

Troy ran a critical eye down Theo’s mostly naked body. Daniel’s hands curled into fists, and he had to plant his feet to keep from running over and sticking himself between his boss and his angel. “You look good to go to me.”

Daniel didn’t miss the looks of disbelief on the others that most probably mirrored his own. Was he really going to have Theo fight three nights in a row?

“Regardless,” Troy said, “I need to find you a worthy opponent. I’ll let Daniel know when I’ve found the right person to fight you.” He slapped a stuffed envelope into Theo’s hands, then turned on his heels and left, flanked by a couple of goons who’d waited by the door.

Theo glanced at Jay, who stuck his hands in his pockets and frowned.

Walt huffed. “Damn it all. He’s going to make you fight tomorrow, and you need time to rest. Those ribs… The bruising is going to hurt like a bitch tomorrow. Glen, shoot the kid with a dose of steroids.”

“What?” Daniel shouted, chorused by Jay and Theo.

“Not steroids like that.” Glen waved off their concern. “Corticosteroids. They’ll help with the swelling.” The breath of relief they all made had Glen chuckling.

“Sounds good,” Theo said, offering his arm.

Glen shook his head as he pulled out a vial, alcohol wipes, and an unwrapped syringe and needle. “This one’s going in your ass.”

Theo’s eyes widened comically, but obediently, he bent over. As Glenn pulled up the dose, lifted a corner of the towel, swabbed, and stuck him, Daniel wondered whether it would do anything since Theo wasn’t human. Probably God would just heal him again, anyway.

“Done. You can get dressed, and I’ll see you when I see you.”

Theo straightened and laid a hand on Glen’s arm. “Thank you,” he said sincerely, then headed for his locker.

Daniel trailed behind, leaning against another set of lockers as he watched Theo pull on his clothes. His brain fixated on the broad shoulders on that youthful body. The sweet curve of muscle on arm and leg, the rounded ass he’d had handfuls of the night before. All too soon, everything was covered, and Theo was leading him out of the fight club and into the cold December night.

Christmas music piped in from hidden speakers lent a cherry air to the city, but Theo’s quick catch of breath and muted cry of discomfort reminded Daniel of that fateful night so long ago. Engines revved as they passed, a car’s tires screeched, a horn blew impatiently.

“Daniel?” Theo’s palm touched his jaw, dragging Daniel away from the memories. As he gazed at Theo, Daniel couldn’t miss noticing the ring of light around his head, like a halo for the angel. His angel.

“I’m fine,” he answered; his subsequent shiver, however, made him seem like a liar.

“Cold?” Theo drew Daniel to his side and put his arm around him.

Daniel hummed. Yes, he was cold, and maybe he shivered because of it, but also icy dread snaked down his spine at the thought of Theo getting back into that cage. They walked in silence until they stepped inside Daniel’s second-floor apartment.

He shucked off his jacket, spinning in place when he heard Theo groan. “Are you okay?” Theo stared back until Daniel huffed. “Right. Not okay. Let me help?” He eased off Theo’s coat and sweatshirt, then knelt to untie his boots.

“You don’t have to do that.” Theo tried to stop him but ended up grabbing his side instead. “Darn it. Wasn’t that shot supposed to help with the pain? I haven’t hurt like this in a long time.”

“It wasn’t narcotics, thank God. That shit’s bad. I almost ended up addicted to them, too. Luckily, I had a doc who gave it to me straight. Cut me off before that could happen. Besides, God will heal you again. You just have to go home.” Daniel glanced upward, then frowned. “Are you going right now?”

Theo kept one arm wrapped around his body as shook his head. His shaggy blond hair flew around his forehead as he drew Daniel closer. Daniel pushed it aside with his fingertips. The move allowed him to study his angel’s stunning features—minus the cut above one eye, and the bruise blooming along his jaw—and gaze into the sky-blue orbs that intrigued him.

“It’s weird to know that you have two thousand years on me, but look so much younger. I just want to wrap you up and protect you, even though you can protect yourself so much better than I can.”

“For the moment, at least.” Theo leaned in and kissed Daniel softly. Lips touched, retreated, and touched again, pressing steadily harder as their hands slipped beneath fabric to find warm flesh.

But Theo’s last comment rang in Daniel’s ears. Again, there was the assumption of continuation.

“I wouldn’t mind a longer shower,” Theo said, nuzzling into Daniel’s hair. “Want to come wash my back?”

“And maybe a few other places?” Daniel added with a grin as he stepped back, laced his fingers with Theo’s, and led him through the bedroom into the bathroom. He faced Theo, took hold of the hem of the angel’s shirt, and carefully lifted it over his head. The wealth of bruises along Theo’s flanks gave him pause until his angel distracted him by helping him undress.

It felt like they had all the time in the world as they slowly disrobed each other, letting fingertips trace, letting eyes linger, letting arousal coalesce into hearts beating faster. Their cocks rose in greeting, meeting with a wet kiss of their own. Daniel stepped towards the shower, Theo following, keeping their bodies close. He reached for the handle and turned it on without looking. After a quick check of the temperature, he drew Theo under the hot water, letting it splash them both.

Theo shook his wet head with a bright laugh, the water flying from his hair. Daniel’s heart leapt to see the wide smile and sheer happiness radiate from Theo instead of the pain-filled hurt when they’d arrived home.
