Breaking my own rules. I’m letting you stay the night and day. You need to destroy that club and that demon, but you also need to spend time with Daniel. These fights have not allowed you the opportunity to get to know each other. I do not want to see you fail.

“You think I’m going to fail?”

“Who said anything about failing?” Daniel asked, half-undressed without his button-down, shoes, and socks. He lifted his white T-shirt over his head, then eyed Theo as he unbuckled his belt and unzipped his slacks. “Do you need help getting undressed?”

“Maybe,” Theo hedged, trying to figure out why Daniel was getting naked.

“I think your head got hit one too many times.” Daniel dropped his pants and stepped free. “I’m going to help you shower. That’s what you asked me to do, wasn’t it?”

“Yes.” Theo’s grin was small, but only because if he tried any bigger, the muscles in his face ached. “And yes, I think I need help. I’m afraid if I bend over, I might fall over.”

“Can’t have that.” Daniel eased closer, carefully peeling the shorts from Theo’s waist and bemoaning all the purpled skin. His fingertips lightly caressed the exposed area a moment before he returned to his task. Shorts, then briefs, then the cup that protected his cock and balls. If he was human, Theo would have been praising the hard plastic cup’s virtues.

There was a snort of laughter in his head, quickly cut off. Theo rolled his eyes upward and chuckled.

“Not sure I’d find this a laughing matter, but I’m glad you’re finding your injuries humorous.”

“I’m not.” Theo sighed, touching his mate’s cheek. “I found humor in the thought of worshipping that cup for its protective values.”

“Ah, well.” Daniel huffed and laughed. “As I happen to like your cock just the way it is, I might join you.” He gazed down at Theo’s flaccid dick and delicately stroked a finger down its limp length. “Well, not like this, but you know what I mean.”

“I do.” Theo guided Daniel’s chin up as he carefully leaned down to kiss him. “Now about that shower…”

????

“Don’t think I forgot about you thinking you’ll fail,” Daniel said, holding Theo’s arm as he resumed his seat on Glen’s table.

Theo sighed, then sighed again when Sy and El moved closer. He held still while Glen applied a few bandages and offered a couple of painkillers and anti-inflammatory meds with a bottle of water.

“Hydrate. You haven’t had nearly enough to drink.”

Gratefully, he accepted the bottle, cracking the lid and downing half of it in one go. He was stalling and, by the crossed arms and irate stares of the others, they knew he was, too.

“If the next guy Troy picks is even better than Demon, I’m not going to win. If I don’t win…” He pulled Daniel between his legs and leaned his cheek against his mate’s chest. “How will I protect you? If I lose, there’ll be no one to save you and your family.”

The derisive snort from Sy was a punch to his heart. Oh sure, the other angels would step in, but this was his duty. Daniel was his chosen mate. If he failed and survived, though, would Daniel want anything to do with him?

“Daniel,” Theo whispered, his voice cracking and stiff as he offered his mate his worst fear, “if I fail and you or your sister are hurt, how could you bear to even look at me again?”

“You know we’ll help in any way we can, Thelial.” El’s support buoyed Theo’s spirits, but he needed to hear what his other half thought.

Daniel delicately cupped Theo’s face, lifting it enough that they could look into each other’s eyes. “How could you fail? In a few hours, you’ll return to Heaven. You’ll heal, you’ll—”

Theo shook his head. “Father won’t heal me. He’s breaking the rule he’d set on Ari and Judah. He’s giving us the chance to spend time together, but I don’t see how I’ll be in any condition to fight on Saturday.”

“I can heal you.”

Theo snapped around toward El, groaning loudly as pain lanced across his chest.

“Don’t move,” El ordered, coming to his side. “Let me help. I’ll do the same thing Adonai did; heal you on the inside. And when this is all over, we’ll heal you completely.”

“Excuse me, Adonai? God healed him? Who are you?”

Theo closed his eyes. How had in the rungs of Heaven’s ladder had he forgotten about Glen?

“Glen,” Sy said, looking at the young medic, “you know the truth.”

“Well, I suspected. I mean, I know those ribs were at least cracked yesterday, yet Theo didn’t even wince when I applied pressure to them before the match. And, oh… there are clouds in your eyes.”
