Theo chuckled at Daniel’s directness. “For the past few years, Adonai has chosen a human for one of his angels. A chosen mate—a soul mate—for us to fall in love with. Previously, it had been male and female, but two years ago, Father chose Gabriel for Ari, then Locke for Judah, and now you for me.”

“Why them?”

“I originally believed Gabriel was chosen because he’d begun to question his faith, but looking back, I think it was his ethos. He wants to help young men and women, and Father knew Ari, Elijah, and Locke—to a degree—would need his help.”

“Why would Ari need Gabriel’s help?”

Theo shook his head slightly. “I’m not at liberty to say.”

Daniel rolled his eyes. “Fine. Tell me why Locke for Judah, then. Their age difference alone…”

“True. Judah was concerned about that, too. Now, this is my speculation, mind you. Only He knows why, but my guess is Judah, as the eldest of his brothers, was a lonely caretaker who needed someone to care for. Locke needed looking after. He’d been living on the streets.”

“Here in Atlantic City? Ouch. That’s awful. I always feel bad for the homeless here. I can’t always but try to give when I can.”

Theo wondered if Daniel realized his thumb was stroking Theo’s forearm. “I’m happy to hear that. You have a big heart, my love. You are perfect for me.”

Daniel

Daniel wondered if he’d had too much to drink. A beautiful angel, complete with beautiful downy white wings, knelt at his feet. He had to be dreaming, and yet he knew it was all so real.

“...my love. You are perfect for me.”

Daniel, however, almost laughed as he shook his head. “You keep saying that, but you don’t know me at all.”

“Adonai knows. I know enough. We will have the rest of our lives to get to know each other.”

“I can’t saddle you with my mess.”

“Daniel,” Theo said, his eyes narrowing, “you aren’t listening to me. I don’t care about your past. I only care about now and in the future, a future committed to loving each other and together performingtzedakahin His name.”

It all sounded so good, but something Theo said earlier popped into his head. “But only if I love you.”

Theo slumped, breaking their connection. He sat back on his heels, and the tips of his wings bent where they hit the ground. “Yes. We can only have the future I see for us if you declare your love for me.”

“I’m sorry, I don’t. I can’t. Humans don’t fall in love at the drop of a hat.”

The angel looked away and stared at the floor. In a choked voice, Theo whispered, “I know. I’ll… I’ll go. Let you get some rest. We’ve got a big day tomorrow.”

Go?That wasn’t what Daniel wanted at all. When Theo moved, Daniel lurched forward to stop him. “I didn’t say you had to leave.”

A faint smile formed on Theo’s lips, his eyes brightening with hope. Daniel hated to think that he gave the angel false hope, but what else could he do? He couldn’t let Theo walk away. Not yet, anyway.

“What should we do, then?” Theo asked. “Talk more?”

Blaring rock music floated through the windows and they both turned to look. As the car zoomed off and the sound faded, Daniel had an idea. He stood and offered his hands to Theo. “Dance with me?”

Theo grinned as he accepted Daniel’s help, shaking his shoulders and ruffling out his wings. Daniel looked his fill, amazed by the majesty of the moment. His beautiful angel. Not a blemish on him anywhere.

“You’re healed,” he said, pointing out the lack of bruises on Theo’s body.

“I am? Oh no… Now I’m going to have to sit through another makeup session.”

“Worth it to see your beautiful face.”

“Oh… um…” Wow. The rosy blush blooming on Theo’s chest and cheeks was simply adorable.

Daniel politely didn’t point out said adorableness, even as he wondered if he could make that happen again and again. Instead, he picked up his cell phone, located the music app his sister had downloaded, and pressed a few buttons to find the love ballads. After toggling the volume to high, he pushed play and set his phone down. As the first notes drifted through the room, Daniel pulled Theo closer.
