“Common sense is very important.” The deputy looked like he wanted to sigh. “He needs to make better decisions.”

“You’re not wrong.” I could’ve listed several examples of why common sense needed to be added to the school curriculum. But we were going for a happier atmosphere, so I looked around to change the subject. “Let’s go see if Lorne needs help. He said he was going to bring beads over for us to make necklaces and it looks like he has a thousand little boxes over there.”

I might’ve been underestimating that number too.

His boxes seemed to have boxes.

Even Kenzie frowned. “We need a Daddy to tell himnomore often. I don’t remember him having that many boxes last time we made jewelry.”

Yeah, he was probably right. That was one little who needed someone to lay down boundaries, and judging from Talon’s raised eyebrow, he thought that someone should be me.

But as he turned back to Kenzie, he smiled. “Naughty dragon, shouldn’t you be protecting Lorne?”

“Boyd’s grumpy and it’s Lorne’s turn.” Kenzie’s smooth way of tossing Lorne under the bus had his Daddy chuckling.

“I think I’m going to have to punish you later. That doesn’t seem very nice.” His words said punishment but the kiss he gave Kenzie’s neck said funishment.

Kenzie’s needy moan was cut off by Talon noticing something as he glanced across the room. “But it looks like some new friends have started to arrive, so that conversation will have to wait.”

I glanced away from Lorne’s growing pile of beads to finally realize what Talon was talking about.

“Visitors?” Kenzie’s excited tone and the way he turned around so fast he almost tripped had Talon chuckling.

They were the center of attention again, which shouldn’t have surprised me, but all my focus was on the two men standing in the doorway.

Stefan.

And Monroe, but I ignored him because, honestly, nothing was more important than the shy little standing there with wide eyes.

Kenzie and Talon were flirting again, but I just ignored them as I slowly started making my way across the room. It was time to get to know the librarian and to make sure no one else got the cute little’s attention first…like the tattooed bad boy currently smiling down at him.

Chapter 3

Stefan

I could do it. “It’s just toys and nosy neighbors. That’s not scary.”

“I happen to think the neighbors are scary, so don’t feel bad.” The deep voice beside me made me jump and twirl around.

The man towering over me stepped back, hands going out to his sides. “Sorry. I said hello but now I realize you didn’t hear me.”

“I was talking to myself and panicking too much. I’m sorry.” It wasnonfiction and sci-fiman.

His name escaped me at the moment but I didn’t worry about that because he was still looking like he was expecting me to panic. That would not do. I didn’t scare my patrons. “How did you like the new series you started? I’ve been expecting you to be in any day to get the next book.”

That had his hands coming down to his sides and he smiled, which brought my stress level down too. “Work’s been busy lately, so I haven’t finished it yet, but it’s good.”

“That’s wonderful.” I wasn’t sure what his interest in the VFW Hall was but I thought if we were both heading in there, we might have something in common…or he was very lost. “Do you know about the…the meeting tonight? It’s my first time coming.”

Because it’d taken me a long time to realize what everyone had been talking about…and even longer to work up the nerve to even think about showing up.

“Yeah.” The nice but gruff-looking man…or something…smiled and looked toward the door curiously. “I’m not sure I’m what some of the subs are looking for, but half the town stopped by the shop over the past week and made sure I knew the playdate was tonight.”

I couldn’t help giggling. “Everyone is very nosy.”

It was overwhelming but fun.

He chuckled. “Yeah, I think they’re at the end of their rope with me, so I figured I’d at least show up once to get everyone off my back.”
