Well, summer flings that went on dates. At first, it was just hooking up in the store room at The Crab Shack where Gavin worked. Then it turned into sitting in the back of the restaurant and eating leftovers while talking about their day. Eventually, they planned some of their days together. Walks along the boardwalk, ice cream after his shift and her favorite of them all, visiting the arcade so she could kick his ass at video games.

The way Nia saw it, they were simply finding ways to have fun without getting caught. They didn’t talk about other people, except for when Gavin pointed out that he thought herisland friendswere the worst people in the world. Truth be told, they weren’tgreat, but they were decent people.

* * *

Nia had spent the day wandering Tybee and she had plans to meet up with Gavin later, at their spot. The old cave had been a good place to sneak off to when they didn’t want anyone to see them. The things they’d done to each other in that cave would make most people blush. Not Nia, though. She was the one doing all the wild things and making him grunt and groan, the sounds echoing through the enclosed space. She knew that he was working the afternoon shift at the Shack, so instead of waiting around for him, she was having herself a little fun.

Which included running into Camilla, a gorgeous blonde she’d hooked up with two summers ago. While not the most generous lover, Camilla did like going down on Nia and she would never turn the girl away just because that’s all she was good at. They grabbed something to eat with her other friends and then Camilla had insisted on finding a private spot for them. Nia suggested the old lifeguard booth, but when they passed the cave, Camilla dragged her into the shadowed space.

Nia felt bad about letting someone else be with her in what she considered hers and Gavin’s space, but Camilla was already on her knees in front of her. The blonde’s hands wandered over her bare legs and flipped her dress up. Nia gasped as Camilla kissed over her underwear, mouth and fingers teasing her. And before she knew it, her underwear was gone and Camilla’s mouth was pressed against her. She lifted one leg over Camilla’s shoulder and arched her back as the blonde ate her out. Sex was always so exhilarating, the rush and the excitement that coursed through her at being devoured like this never faded. The blonde was also good with her mouth, which was why Nia kept going back for more, especially since she was lacking in every other aspect.

And then she was coming, the orgasm crashing into her as she moaned loudly, her fingers tangled in Camilla’s hair. A small smile played across her lips as she rode out the climax, until someone cleared their throat. Nia’s eyes flew open and she saw Gavin watching them, pain etched in every inch of his face. He stared at her like she’d betrayed him and Nia felt the pinch in her chest. She’d made plans with Gavin, instead lost track of time and was caught with someone else.

“Gavin…”

He shook his head and pulled something out of his pocket. “I got you this,” he said, the words coming out strained, and he tossed the velvet box onto the sand a few inches away from her. Then he was walking away, hands clenching into fists as he vanished out of sight.

Nia separated herself from Camilla, who was laughing softly. “Dramatic much?”

Ignoring the blonde, Nia picked up the box and was tempted to flip it open, but she knew that nothing good would come from that. Instead, she slipped it into the pocket of her dress before starting for the beach house. Maybe she could talk to Gavin and apologize, maybe even explain herself.

Except when she got to the house half an hour later, Gavin was gone with a simple note on her bed that read:

You were the best part of my summer.

CHAPTER1

PRESENT DAY, DECEMBER | WILDES, DELAWARE

“You were supposed to bring alcohol,”Frankie greeted him when he held out a giant bouquet of flowers. Even with the protest, the brunette took the flowers and gave him a hug.

“You deserve flowers every single day.” Gavin winked at Frankie and hugged Milo, getting a poke in the side in the process.

“Quit flirting with my girl, Gav,” Milo snapped playfully which made him and Frankie laugh.

He patted his friend on the shoulder and stepped further into the apartment. Even without seeing the rest of their guests, Gavin felt underdressed in his light blue shirt with Santas surfboarding and jeans. No part of him believed that this would be a fancy party, but judging by Frankie’s bright pink pantsuit and Milo’s formal shirt and pants combination, this was a party for adults.

Gavin was fucking happy for his best friend, because Milo finding love with Frankie was probably the best thing that had happened to him. He knew that the past year had been a series of ups and downs for the couple, but they finally made it through the tunnel onto the other side. Speaking of tunnels, Gavin smiled when Jackson appeared and gave his other best friend a hug as well. Growing up with these two by his side was amazing. Gavin knew that he was lucky to have an incredible family that he was born into, as well as brothers he’d found along the way. Life would have been so different if he didn’t have Jackson and Milo by his side.

Stepping farther into the apartment, Gavin smiled at Oleander and when the woman beside her turned to say something, he froze.

“No fucking way.”

Nia fucking Thomas.

“What’s wrong?” Milo asked from beside him

Sucking in a sharp breath, he tore his eyes away from Nia. Gavin wished he could forget the perfect curve of her throat he’d kissed so many times or the perfect nose that she wiggled when she was trying not to laugh.

Instead, he swallowed and looked at his best friend. “How do you know Nia?”

“Who’s Nia?”

“Virginia Thomas,” he said, blindly gesturing in the direction of the woman he never thought he’d see again.

Frankie tilted her head and said, “Ginny?”

Of course she changed her name. “Is that what she goes by now?”
