Ginny

How about I come with you to one session?

Mom

All of you pushing me to do this makes me sound crazy.

Ginny

Don’t use that word, Amma. And there’s nothing wrong with therapy. Did you read those articles I sent you?

Mom

I read one, it didn’t really answer any of my questions.

As she started a reply to her mother, another text came through from Gavin, the notification appearing at the top of her phone.

Gavin

I realize that you’re busy or maybe you’re just ignoring me.

Rolling her eyes, she swiped the notification away and replied to her mother.

Ginny

Can we talk about this later? I have to get back to work.

Mom

Okay, my heart. Speak to you later.

Breathing out through her nose, Ginny closed her eyes and pressed the phone to her forehead. Between babysitting her mother and wrapping her head around this wholeGavinthing, she was exhausted. But she only had enough energy for one thing right now and that was certainly not her mother being difficult about getting better.

Gavin

I hear you’re doing a photoshoot at the shelter this week?

I realize that you’re busy or maybe you’re just ignoring me.

Ginny

Hello to you too, Little Rhodes.

Will my being at the shelter be too much of a distraction for you?

Gavin

Even when you’re not anywhere near me, you’re a distraction.

Ginny’s eyes widened at the text and she wondered if Gavin meant to send it. Or was he drunk? It was two p.m. and she was all for day drinking, but when surrounded by animals, that was probably not the best idea.

Gavin

I won’t be around anyway, but I’m sure Bronte can help you with whatever you need.

Ginny

Just because your name is on the building doesn’t mean I need you there.
