I’ve taken to blocking their numbers during the holidays, so no.

Stella

Then what’s going on?

Ginny

Gavin Rhodes reappeared in my life.

At the long silence and the three dots appearing and disappearing, Ginny knew her sister was typing out a long message in caps lock and editing her spelling as she went. Stella was an English teacher and a stickler for proper spellings. As Ginny put her phone aside, it started ringing with Stella’s name and picture flashing across the screen. Wincing at the volume, Ginny hesitated before sliding to answer it.

“I was looking forward to your all caps text,” she said in lieu of a greeting.

“There are too many words to say that would take me forever to type out. But are you kidding me with Gavin Rhodes?” Stella was borderline screechy and Ginny held the phone a few inches away from her ear until she was done.

“The universe decided that I needed to be properly punished for something and tossed him back into my life.”

“How? Where? Why?”

Ginny laughed at the dramatic gasps Stella dropped between each word. “He’s best friends with Frankie’s boyfriend, so obviously he was at their Christmas party.”

“Oh fuck, that’s awkward.”

Ginny shrugged, even though her sister couldn’t see her, and then tucked her phone between her ear and shoulder as she tapped her keyboard to wake up her computer.

“It’s fine. I don’t see myself being invited to all of their parties anyway.”

Stella sighed heavily, the sound echoing through the phone. “Okay, but what about Spencer?”

“What about him?” Ginny asked, logging into her email to start working through her checklist.

“He’s your best friend, in case you forgot. And Gavin is his brother. Which means…”

“It means nothing, Stel. Spencer hasn’t brought Gavin up even once since I moved here and I don’t talk about him either. I’ve seen him and whatever curiosity might have existed has now been satisfied.”

There was a long pause and Ginny pulled the phone away to make sure the call hadn’t dropped. She set it on the table and turned on the speaker as she went back to work—her personal inbox was an absolute mess.

“How did he look?”

“What?” Ginny frowned.

“Those Rhodes boys were always the best looking on the island. Is he hotter now?”

Ginny sighed and before her mind could conjure up the visual of Gavin again, she shook her head. “He’s average looking, I would say.”

Stella guffawed and she even heard Rahul, her brother-in-law, snort loudly on the other end. “Honey, there is no way that any of those men areaveragein any shape or form.”

Rolling her eyes, Ginny leaned back in her chair. “Yes, he’s hotter now. Annoyingly so. It would be so much easier to dislike him if he was just…average.”

“I’m sorry the universe is being an asshole to you, Gin. But maybe this is a good thing. Both of you can talk about what went wrong all those years ago and maybe be friends with him again.”

“I don’t think he wants anything to do with me,” she admitted with a heavy sigh. “Anyway, you two should get back to burning down your house. I’ll talk to you in a few days, okay?”

“Stay out of trouble, Gin. Love you!”

Two more cups of coffee and three hours of sorting through notes later, Ginny was finally updating the scheduling platform Frankie had designed. Called Party Central, it was the one place where every employee could plug in information about the events they were planning for the foreseeable future. After experiencing absolute chaos at Knots & Crosses, Frankie wanted to streamline the process and she got a developer to create the most sophisticatedandeasy to use software Ginny had ever encountered.
