“You’ll have to come and get them,” she teases.

“That so?”

“Uh, huh.”

“You know what else I want, Hailey Jones?” My heart pounds as I reach into my pocket.

“What’s that, Adrian Clausen?” she teases back.

I remove her hands from my neck and clear my throat as I sink to my knee, taking her by surprise. She lets out a squeak as her hand flies to her mouth.

“I’m not perfect, and there are a million things that could go wrong, but I think we’re stronger together. If you’ll have me, I’ll love you forever, Hailey.” I open the velvet box with shaky hands. “This was my mother’s. I know it has a lot of bad history, but you’ve taught me it isn’t the things in life. It’s the heart we put into life. Will you...”

“Yes, yes. I’ll marry you.” Hailey drops to her knees and flings her arms around me with such force we almost tumble over.

“If you don’t like the ring, I’ll understand. We can get another,” I say between her frantic kisses.

“It’s perfect.” She kisses my lips, cheek, nose, and eyelids. Anything uncovered is fair game. “You’re perfect.”

“We’re perfect,” I laugh, enjoying her enthusiasm. “But the biggest question of them all is...” I wait long enough, she pulls back to look me in the eye.

“What? What’s bigger thanwill you marry me?”

“What kind of cupcakes will we have at the wedding?”

She throws her head back, and peals of laughter fill the room. I’ll spend the rest of my life hearing her laugh, and I can’t think of anything more perfect than that.

EPILOGUE

***

Hailey

I peel the covers back as slowly as possible, but Adrian’s long arm clamps around my middle. He pins me to his chest, spanning my tummy with his large hand. The wedding ring I slipped onto his finger in the fall glistens like a shiny new toy. It makes me giddy and ridiculously happy every time I see it.

“Not so fast, Cupcake.” Adrian nestles his chin into the crook of my neck. “What happens to naughty elves who sneak out of my bed?”
