“I wasn’t certain what to do. I didn’t know if you wanted to continue,” she said.

“Oh my God. How could you not have realized that you were the best thing that has happened to me in two years?”

She gave a little giggle. “Maybe because we didn’t talk much. All we did was express our needs with our bodies.”

That was true. Once they reached his suite, it had been on like Donkey Kong. They had barely come up for air, and then exhausted, he’d fallen into the best sleep he’d experienced in years.

“We’ll talk more, but just realize that this child is a part of me. A part of me that I want to be involved with. And you’re not going anywhere.”

She tensed and he knew that had not been the right thing to say. But if he had his way, she would stay right here in Missoula until this baby was born and maybe even forever if he could convince her to stay.

“I’m going home for Christmas,” she said.

It would be best not to argue with her. It would only cause her blood pressure to rise.

“We’ll wait and see what the doctor has to say,” he said. “That baby is your top priority. Everything else can wait.”

“I’m going home for Christmas,” she repeated and he realized she had a stubborn streak.

CHAPTER6

Amelia hadn’t come this far not to make it all the way to Whitefish for Christmas. Besides, she wanted her mother at the birth. She wanted her family to be there supporting her, and now, she also wanted Ryan.

He was the baby’s father. She had tried her best to find him, but without a last name, it had been impossible.

Odd that she’d searched for him so hard and he’d been right here in Missoula all along. Now she wished she’d taken the job she’d been offered with a firm in Missoula, but oh no, she’d thought it would be better to work for the most prestigious firm in Cheyenne. A conservative firm that had let her know they didn’t approve of her single-mother status. Of her unmarried and being pregnant. Old white lawyers who were the partners had condemned her.

And promptly fired her not because she was pregnant, but rather her work was not the quality their firm was looking for. It was a complete lie, but frankly, she didn’t care.

The one case she’d taken to trial had made her enough money that she’d spent the last two months at home sending out her resume, and she hoped once she was able to work again, she’d be fine.

Pregnant and fired in nine months. Life had certainly put a tarnish on her near-perfect journey. One her sisters would soon gloat over. But losing her job wasn’t as important as her baby. As long as her little accident was born healthy, that was all that mattered.

And now Ryan was back in the picture and she liked the way he was holding her hand and taking care of her. It felt good. Right.

When they arrived at the hospital, he gazed at her. “You have to tell them this is my child or they won’t allow me in the room.”

Nodding, she sighed. She’d not dealt with this before. All her doctor’s visits she’d been alone. It would be different now. She could tell he wanted to be in his baby’s life.

The two other paramedics who had ridden in the front came to the back of the ambulance and opened the doors.

“Fellas, I’m officially off duty,” he told them. “I will do my best to make it to the children’s party, but right now, Amelia is my priority.”

His friend Stan glanced at him. “This is Amelia?TheAmelia?”

“Yes,” he said, grinning at his friends like he was the happiest man alive. “I’ve finally found her.”

The man shook his head and laughed. “Thank goodness. You were driving us all crazy talking about her nonstop.”

“This is the woman from the cruise?” Adam asked. “And she’s pregnant…”

“With my child,” he said as they pulled the stretcher out.

“Congratulations, Amelia and Ryan,” Stan told her as they sat her on the ground and then lifted and locked the stretcher.

A blush filled her cheeks. “Who knew we would find each other like this?”

Ryan walked alongside her and cleared the path, people smiling at him dressed in his Santa suit. A nurse met them at the door, and Ryan gave her the vitals he’d taken. Then they wheeled her into a room and lifted her and put her in a bed.
