“Love you, Mom,” she said even though her mom couldn’t hear her and disconnected the call.

It had been such a long tiring day. And nothing had gone as planned. She had always been the child that had everything go her way, and now suddenly, she’d hit a rough patch. Getting pregnant, being fired, and now finding Ryan. She still wasn’t certain that was a good thing.

Though the man was still handsome as sin. The memory of the night they made this child came back to her and she moaned. It had been a wonderful night. A night she would never forget. And now she had her little accident to always remind her of that evening.

But what about Ryan? Was it just a one-night stand or could there be something lasting between them?

Closing her eyes, she sighed and soon fell asleep.

CHAPTER9

The roads were treacherous and the thought of Amelia navigating them while nine months pregnant left him furious. Yes, he understood she wanted to see her family, but she was carrying their child.

That baby should be her only concern right now.

Twice, he helped to pull a car out of the ditch. Finally, he stopped at the grocery store and picked up a few items for them to eat – fresh fruits, vegetables, and a prepared pizza.

Even a bouquet of flowers. He’d been unable to resist. How did you tell someone you were so happy to see them and thrilled they were pregnant with your child?

Once he was out of the grocery store, he drove to the apartment. He wanted to talk about their situation but was uncertain what to say.

All he could think was that he didn’t want her to leave Missoula. He wanted her right here with him when she had that child. Her and that baby. He wanted to create a family.

If he had his way, they would be going before a justice of the peace and getting married. Tonight, tomorrow, just as soon as possible. Or if she wanted a big wedding, he would agree as long as she was by his side.

But Amelia seemed tense, perhaps uncertain. Maybe it was because she was pregnant. Maybe she was nervous about how he would react.

However long they had together, he was going to show her that this thing, whatever it was between them, was worth fighting for.

When he pulled up in front of the apartment, he could see the television playing through the blinds. Hopefully, she had remained in the recliner with her feet up.

Stepping out of the jeep, he sank into snow that was now knee-high and still coming down. On his way to pick up her suitcase from her car, he’d called his captain and told him he needed some time off. But his friends had already advised their captain that he wouldn’t be coming in. They even agreed to take his shifts for the next week. Maybe even longer if she had the baby before Christmas.

He loved his job, but Amelia and the baby were more important. There was no way he was going to miss the baby’s birth. That was his child too.

When he walked inside, she startled awake. She’d been sleeping, which was exactly what she needed.

“You’re back,” she said.

“Sorry, it took me so long, but I had to pull two families out of the ditch, and I went to the grocery store to stock up on some things I thought you could eat. And I brought you flowers. I’m so happy we found one another.”

“Oh, thank you,” she said. “I’d get up and put them in a vase, but I don’t know if you have one.”

“I’ll take care of them,” he said. “But I wanted you to have flowers. After doing this alone for nine months, it was the least I could do.”

A smile crossed her face. “Thank you. I called my mother and told her I was stuck in Missoula.”

“Good, that way she won’t worry,” he said, setting her suitcase down.

“Are you hungry?”

“Starving,” she said.

“I decided to pick up a pizza with no pepperoni at the store. It’ll take just a minute to heat it up.”

Into the kitchen, he put away the groceries and then came back and carried her suitcase into his bedroom. He would love nothing more than to sleep beside her tonight, but knew that was probably not going to be an option. So he’d take the couch.

“I was going to sleep here in the recliner,” she said when he returned.
