He could deliver the child, but what if there were complications? What if she had a medical emergency? It would just be better for them to stay here but he would not win that argument.

“Yes, Mom, I can deliver a baby, but I don’t want to lose either of them. And that’s my biggest fear.”

There was a moment of silence.

“You said you love her,” she reminded him.

“I do,” he replied.

“Then sometimes we have to do things we don’t feel comfortable doing to make the person we love happy. And, son, this is one of those things. I know your logic is telling you to stay home and keep her safe, but you’ve got to make her happy. We’ll miss you at Christmas. And please let me know when you get there, but you’ve got to do this for Amelia.”

It wasn’t often that he disagreed with his mother, but this time he wanted to tell her no. But he didn’t.

“I’ll let you know, Mom,” he said. “Love you.”

“Love you too, son,” she replied and disconnected the call.

A sleepy-headed Amelia walked into the kitchen. “Was that your mom?”

“Yes,” he said.

“I hope you told her how much I enjoyed yesterday,” she said.

“I didn’t, but you can call her later,” he replied as he went into the kitchen and poured her a cup of coffee.

This morning he felt nervous. So afraid.

“Did you see the sun is shining?” she said, her face filled with joy and happiness.

“Yes,” he replied not at all happy. If only Mother Nature would have given him several more days of snow, he’d have been perfectly fine.

“How long will it take them to clear the roads?”

“I don’t know,” he replied. “Are you still determined to get to Whitefish?”

“Yes,” she said. “It’s my family. I want to be there with them. I understand why you’re hesitant about driving, but I would feel so much better if you took me. But if you don’t want to go, I understand. I’m leaving in the morning. I’ll give the road department today, but in the morning, I’m headed to Whitefish.”

This was exactly what he feared. That no matter what, she was going with or without him.

“You know, I think we’re having our first argument,” he said.

She grinned. “No, I’m not going to fight with you. I understand why you feel the way you do, but I’m going home.”

“And there is that stubborn streak of yours,” he said.

“Not stubborn. Determined. This baby is going to be born surrounded by my family. My mother, especially, and you, I hope.”

With a deep breath, he’d lost the battle before it even began.

“You’re not going anywhere right now without me. So as much as I disagree, I’ll take you to Whitefish. We’ll leave at nine in the morning so the roads have a little time to thaw.”

Like a child, she clapped her hands. “I can’t wait. I’m so excited. It’s going to be a wonderful Christmas.”

CHAPTER18

The roads were treacherous and Amelia was so glad that Ryan was driving his jeep.

“Thank you for coming home with me,” she said. “I’m so happy you’re going to be here with me.”
