“Are you feeling all right?” he asked, not taking his eyes off the road.

“Yes, my feet are swelling, but that’s because they’re hanging down. As soon as we get there, I’ll put them up.”

“Are your folks going to be okay with us being together?”

“What more can happen?”

He laughed. “You’re right.”

“I think they’re going to love you,” she said, hoping they would. She loved him.

That she was certain of; it was the marriage thing that made her nervous. She thought her parents would love him, but as for him sleeping with her and them not being married, they might have a slight issue with that.

Though why, she didn’t know. It wasn’t like she was going to get knocked up or anything.

This morning, she’d lost the mucus plug and knew that their little accident would be arriving in one to three days. She hadn’t told Ryan because she knew they would not have been going anywhere if she’d told him that labor was imminent.

All morning, she’d felt giddy. Soon she’d be home and she couldn’t wait to introduce Ryan to her family.

They were thirty minutes out. Thirty minutes before she had to tell her family the obvious. That her little accident would be born very soon.

Never in her life had she done something her parents disapproved of, and while she knew they would love her, she still felt anxious about telling them.

And what was the secret that her mother wanted all of them to come home and learn? She’d been very quiet about something. Amelia feared that one of them might be ill or dying, and that terrified her.

As much as she hoped that she and Ryan would make it as a couple, he’d yet to tell her he loved her or even promise her forever. While she understood he wanted to be certain, she knew. No matter what happened, she wanted him by her side as they walked through life. She wanted them to watch their children grow and go off to college. She wanted him holding her hand when she took her last breath.

Maybe he thought she was too stubborn to make a life with. After all, she’d coerced him into taking her home to Whitefish.

As they went through town, a big semi-truck ran a red light right in front of them and she knew he was having visions of what happened to Sandy and Charlotte.

Reaching out, she touched his arm. “We’re fine. You kept us safe. Thank you for being so careful.”

Glancing at him, she saw his muscles were tense and she rubbed her hand against his arm.

“Bad things can happen to anyone,” he said. “Even the golden child.”

She’d forgotten she told him that’s what her sisters had always called her. They were going to enjoy seeing her fall from that perch. But she didn’t care as long as she had Ryan and her little accident. They were all that mattered.

“Not with you by my side,” she said. “You’ll take good care of me and our child.”

With a smile, he glanced at her. “I’ll do my best.”

They drove through the intersection and he turned onto her street. It had been years since she’d been back and it felt so good to be home once again.

“That house right there,” she said. “It looks like no one is here yet.”

She was glad. That would give her parents time to come to terms with her pregnancy.

Ryan put the Jeep in park and turned off the SUV. “Let me help you. The sidewalk is clear, but I’m not taking any chances.”

This man she loved with all her heart. Reaching over, she grabbed his head, pulled his lips down to hers, and kissed him thoroughly.

When they came apart, he smiled at her. “I needed that.”

“And I need you,” she said.

He stepped out and came around to open the door. “Soon, you won’t have to help me get out.”
