“Are you?”

She knew the question was deeper than just him suggesting she stood by him playing the game. Before she could give any kind of answer, his lips connected with hers. Longer and more intense than any other one before.

A low moan filtered between them, causing him to wrap his arms around her to pull her closer. That elicited another pleasured moan from her lips.

“Get a room, you two! Let’s play some cards,” Juliet shouted from the other end of the yard.

Griffin chuckled against her lips, then pulled away, grabbing her hand. “How are you at cards?”

She felt the lie rising to the surface but shoved it down. “About as good as I am at cornhole.”

His deep laughter filled her heart with joy. “And I guess you still want to be on Juliet’s team.”

“Of course. I will eventually win against you.”

He smiled but didn’t respond.

They all took a seat around the table on the deck. Bryce shuffled the deck of cards first. The games they started to play didn’t require teams. Five card draw. Texas Hold’em. Poker games she had to learn every time they introduced a new one. But in the end, it didn’t matter she lost every hand; she had fun.

Five hours later, after Bryce grilled hamburgers, they left. Griffin pulled into his driveway, putting the vehicle in park. He looked at his house then glanced at hers before meeting her gaze.

“Want to come in and watch a movie or something?”

This was the first time since arriving in town and hanging out with Griffin that they’d spent the entire day together. Every other time had always been after work or on their day off but only for a few hours. He didn’t want the time to end and neither did she.

“Or something. Sure.”

His eyes glittered with passion at her suggestive meaning. Though after the words came out, the worry slipped in. Was she ready for that level? To sleep with him and put her heart even further in his hands?

It would only make it harder to leave. When she eventually had to. Because even though it’d been a decent week, she had running on her mind all the time.

He must’ve sensed where her thoughts slithered to because he slid his hand into hers.

“I’ll make popcorn if you want some.”

He had such an easy way of turning the situation from panic-inducing to an even keel.

“I’d like that. I want to run home and change.” She looked down at her shirt where ketchup had spilled.

“I don’t mind a little ketchup.”

She giggled. “Well, I do.”

He lifted their hands, kissing the back of hers before letting her go. “I’ll make some Kool-Aid to go with the popcorn.”

“Sounds wonderful.”

And it did. Everything Griffin always did was spectacular. He made her feel so safe and secure all the time.

He jaunted up his sidewalk while she dashed across her yard. Her house felt stuffy the moment she opened the door. Weird. The air-conditioner must not be working. She’d turned it on a few days ago when the temps rose a little higher than she liked. Fresh air was nice, but the humidity wasn’t always great.

She froze in her bedroom when she saw the curtains to the side and the window open. They hadn’t been like that when she left. She would’ve remembered opening the window. Yes, the curtains she’d tossed to the side to let in the sunlight. And perhaps give Griffin a view or two of her changing from her PJs to her clothes. It had been naughty of her this morning when she saw him rummaging in his kitchen, and she found herself doing it anyway. Whether he watched her undress she wasn’t sure. He didn’t comment on it when they left for Bryce’s.

But she had never opened the window.

She backed out of the room, listening for anything out of place. She heard nothing but her heavy, uncontrolled breathing. A glance at the thermostat in the hallway showed it off. She never turned it off.

Had she?
