She didn’t dare look around the yard, but she tried to recall if Griffin had a lock on the gate in the backyard. How easily could she get away? He probably didn’t because he felt safe. Unlike her who would’ve needed that extra barrier to keep people out.

“Look, Eve, I know this comes as a shock, but we did this out of love,” Juliet insisted in that same calm voice as before, but the tension still lingered.

Love? No, this was an ambush. He said she could confess in her own time. He lied.

And he signed her death warrant.

He had no idea the wrath he dropped on her head.

“When did you do this? How did you do this?” Her head snapped up, glaring.

He flinched at her hard stare. “I pulled prints from the coffee cup you left in my office three days ago. I had to know why you didn’t want me to run your prints.”

Three days ago.

No wonder Griffin had kept his distance the last few days. Because he despised her now. Wanted nothing to do with her. Waiting to arrest her.

Oh God.

The even worse part washecould already be here. Hiding. Waiting. Plotting her demise.

Griffin pulled another sheet of paper out, laying it on top of the other one. This one also had her picture on it. This time with the large word MISSING written underneath.

Ha! She wasn’t missing. She chose to hide.

“You were reported missing over two months ago. I haven’t done anything about it, and I need to know how to handle this.”

She frowned at his choice of words.

“What?”

He set the folder down, covering the picture. Then he took a few steps her way. He stopped when he saw her retreat for every step he took.

“You’re living under a fake name. You’re working under a fake name. That’s just one reason I could arrest you.”

“Grif!” Juliet huffed.

Eve prepared her stance to run. She had to hope she could outrun him.

“I need you to talk to me. Tell me who you’re running from.”

No. She couldn’t now. No matter what she said, he’d only see the laws she broke. This was why she never wanted to confess anything in the first place. He was a lawman first, man second.

She turned and made a run for it. The fence gate was in her reach with no lock hindering her path. Strong arms grabbed her from behind, pulling her against his chest. She struggled, kicking and hitting, hating that she might hurt him in the process, yet it didn’t stop her from trying to escape. She never could fromhim, so she didn’t know why she thought it’d work with Griffin.

Their struggles brought them tumbling to the ground. Griffin got the upper hand, pinning her body and shoving her hands above her head. They both were breathing heavily, staring at each other.

“The last three days were the hardest days of my life, trying to stay away from you so I didn’t explode.”

“So you wouldn’t hurt me?” she whispered, tugging on her hands so he’d let her go. Telling him he was hurting her, even though he really wasn’t. His grip was tight but gentle.

He leaned closer. “I would never hurt you.”

Then his lips caressed hers. So softly, it’s as if she imagined it.

“I’m so filled with rage right now I can barely contain it.” He let her hands go, brushing hair away from her cheek. “Not at you. I’m not mad at you. I’m angry at the fact you had to run away to save yourself. I’m angry that you thought you couldn’t trust me with this information. I’m angry that my job dictates I respond to what I found and I can’t seem to do it. Not until I know I’m handling it in the only way that keeps you safe.”

Despite the fact he still held her to the ground, she didn’t fear he’d hurt her. Griffin would never. She believed that. She trusted it. For the first time, that feeling cemented into her brain. She should’ve put her faith in him from the beginning.
