“Doesn’t the beat of my heart tell you how scared I am as well?”

“I’m scared I’m not as strong as you think I am. I want you. I want to…stay the night.” She sighed. “But I don’t want to hurt you in the end, because I’m a coward. You want me to do things I might not ever be able to do. I don’t think I can confront him.”

This was progress. He’d take baby steps over no steps at all.

Would he be picking up the pieces of his heart down the road? High possibility. But he’d take the risk. He’d take any part of her he could get. When he could get it.

“I’m going to prove you wrong. I’m going to show you how strong you truly are. In the meantime, I’m going to love you like you deserve to be loved. So…” He put his hands on her waist, jutting her closer so her body grazed his. “Your house or mine?”

Wasshe doing the right thing?

As Griffin’s lips devoured hers, she knew in her heart she was. This man was the kindest, tenderest man she’d ever met. Deep down she knew he’d never hurt her. Putting her trust in him was one of the hardest things she’d ever done. But she did. She was.

She broke the kiss, breathing heavily. When she hadn’t answered his question, he kissed her as if that would pull the answer out of her. It worked.

“Yours.” Her eyes grazed to his lips. “Now.”

The devilish grin on his lips said she was in for a magical night. He swung her into his arms, eliciting a delighted giggle from her.

Then he was depositing her on his bed after walking faster than she’d ever seen him do before.

“Don’t move.” His grin inched up even higher. “Well, you can get naked, but don’t get out of that bed. I’ll be right back.”

He left the room.

She wondered where he was going when she heard little beeps echo her way. Setting the alarm. Okay. She understood now. They were retiring for the evening, and he wanted to make sure everything was secure.

She shimmied out of her pants and tossed her shirt off, throwing both articles to the floor. Cool air rushed across her skin, making her shiver. Her hands wove around to her back, her fingers grazing the clasp to her bra. She shivered again. This time from nerves.

She wasn’t clueless when it came to what happened between a man and a woman. Just because she’d never done this before didn’t mean she didn’t know what to expect. Of course, it also didn’t mean it made her comfortable to think of getting completely naked. She’d never been naked in front of anyone before.

Now that she was alone, her thoughts to run amuck, she wasn’t sure this was the brightest idea. Sure, he confessed to being with only two women, but that was two more people than she’d ever been with.

Growing up, life hadn’t been easy. Trusting anyone. The few she did trust, she never had any passing attraction to them.

Startled at the noise, she dropped her hands, her eyes darting to the door. Griffin stood in the doorway, a sweet smile on his face. He held something in his hands that when he moved in the slightest, it crinkled.

Condoms.

Oh boy, this was happening.

Maybe the panic lit up her face because he dashed to the bed, tossing the packages to the nightstand, and cradled her cheek.

“We can wait. Nothing needs to happen. I can even sleep in the living room. But what I don’t want is you frightened. Not of me.”

His warm hand heated the parts of her body that had frozen from her worry. All the doubts that had attacked her in his absence slipped away. Well, most of them. A few lingering doubts held her captive.

“I want this. I’m…” She leaned into his hand pressing against her cheek, closing her eyes. “I don’t want to mess this up. I already am.”

A soft kiss hit her forehead. “We need to work on your confidence. You’re not messing anything up.”

Her eyes gradually opened. The first thing she saw was the patience in his gaze. His hand still touched her cheek, stroking, calming the last remaining nerves.

That’s right.

She was safe with Griffin. If she asked him to stop at any time, he would. She had nothing to fear from him.
