“Good.” Eve looked around, anywhere but at Juliet. “I’d like to go back to normal. Not pretend like everything is the same, but I don’t want to be treated differently. With kids gloves or anything.”

“Won’t happen.”

She looked at Juliet. The sharp gleam in her eye said she was telling the truth.

“Everyone said what they wanted to say today, and tomorrow will be like it never happened. Trust me. I lived through it myself.”

Eve was coming to learn to trust her. To trust everyone in town. How could she not? They made it difficult to ignore them. To see the faith in their eyes they’d be by her side every step of the way.

Night came quickly, just as busy near closing. When Griffin came to pick her up, since they drove to town together, he even helped close the cafe. He pulled into his driveway, glancing at her house before settling on her.

“My house or yours?”

“Yours.”

She wasn’t ready to be alone. Though she knew he wouldn’t leave her alone. But despite that, she felt safer in his house. The reminder of those odd incidents still echoed in her mind. He hadn’t forgotten either.

“I’m going to dust for prints around the windowsill in your room. Is that okay?”

“If you think it’s necessary.”

“Just to be safe.”

They headed for the kitchen where Griffin grabbed two plates from the cupboard and set them on the table. She unloaded the food from the bag she’d taken home from the cafe. They divided out the food, yet neither made a move to eat.

“Have you heard from him? I know he was served the protection order.”

She shivered. So Darrian officially knew where she was and that he wasn’t welcome near her. His wrath would be insane.

“Eve?” Griffin reached out his hand.

She grasped it, unable to meet his eyes. He’d see the fear embedded in them. “No, I haven’t. You know I don’t have a cell phone yet, and I haven’t been home to check the messages on the house phone.”

She’d told herself to get a cell phone. Griffin had even suggested it before he knew the truth, always chuckling at her that she didn’t like technology. It hadn’t been that. She didn’t want to lie everywhere she went. Use her fake identity when she didn’t have to. She’d survived the last two months without a cell phone. It hadn’t been that hard. Even in her old life, she had never been big on social media. She already had the media following her around without her consent. So why put herself out there even more when the world didn’t need to know every aspect of her life?

“We should fix that. You should have a phone on you at all times. In case of an emergency.”

She hated the thought of needing to call him in a panic. Her body betrayed her, making her tremble. His grip tightened.

“I’ll look into it.”

“We can go together tomorrow.”

She smiled at the way he said it so innocently as if he wasn’t doing it to keep her safe, but because he wanted to spend as much time with her as he could. She knew better. Though she’d take his protectiveness because it was new and refreshing.

“Can we go to my house when we’re done eating? I need some clothes.”

“I’ll do the window while you pack.”

This time his hand trembled and she tightened her grip in comfort. He made it sound like she was moving in when that wasn’t a subject they had touched. She could tell he regretted saying it.

“I’ll check my messages as well.”

She decided to ignore it. They weren’t ready for that level of talk. She had no idea if she’d even stay in town. Darrian might not have reached out yet, but he would. He’d make her life a living hell until she had no choice but to run again.

Griffin must’ve sensed where her thoughts had taken her because he leaned closer, pressing his lips to hers.

“We’re in this together. Everything. Remember that.” The kiss deepened. “Remember the promise you made as well.”
