“She’s not answering. So you can leave.”

“You can mind your own business,” the man snapped, glaring.

Griffin had his service weapon strapped to his waist. Didn’t the man see it? Reasonably assume who he was speaking to? In case he didn’t, Griffin swiped his badge from his back pocket, returning a glare with flare.

“It is my business. I’m telling you to leave this property.”

The man stepped closer. “Do you know who I am?”

“Someone not welcome here.” Griffin shoved his badge back into his pocket, resting his hand lightly on the butt of his gun. “But please, enlighten me with a name.”

“Bryan Torrenson. I’m the attorney for Darrian Carrington. And I’m not leaving until I speak to Evelyn. We’re worried about her safety.”

“She’s fine.” Griffin narrowed his eyes. “Now that she’s far away from her brother. She’s perfectly fine.”

The man’s nostrils flared. “I’m sorry that you think Mr. Carrington would hurt his sister. He would never. I suppose you’re the one who bullied her into filing that preposterous protection order.”

“There’s only one bully standing here, and it’s not me.”

“I would be careful with what you say. You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

Wow. This jackass thought forceful words with a demonic glare were going to scare him. Not likely.

“And I don’t think you understand who you’re dealing with. I told you to leave, and if I have to say it again, I will arrest you for trespassing.”

Bryan smirked. “Evelyn hasn’t asked me to leave, and seeing as it’s her property, your word means nothing.”

“Well, seeing as she rents the property—from me,” he emphasized, loving the way the guy’s eyes rounded in surprise, “I’d say my word holds a lot of weight.”

It appeared they were in a standoff now. Bryan continued to stare as if weighing his next move. The only move Griffin would allow was for him to leave the property.

The door swung open, causing both of them to turn toward the sound. Griffin could see the agitation in her stance, yet the bravery coating her eyes.

“You heard Chief Stuart. Leave the property now. I have nothing to say to you.”

“Evelyn—”

“It’s Ms. Carrington to you!” she snapped, cutting Bryan off.

“Your brother is concerned about your welfare. He’d like to speak to you.”

Eve crossed her arms. “Well, he’s not allowed to. I have nothing to say to him. Or you.”

Griffin glared at the man as he walked past, taking a spot next to Eve. She was handling herself well, but he felt better being closer to her. Being a lawyer, he didn’t think Bryan would be stupid enough to lay a hand on her. But one could never know what another person would do.

Bryan nodded. “I wish you felt differently. We will be contesting the order. We’ll see you in court.”

“Until then, you can stay away from Eve. If I see you on this property again, there will be no chatting. Just cuffs.” Griffin’s hand tightened on his weapon. He knew Bryan saw the gesture, though he made no comment on it.

He turned around and left without another word. As soon as he was nowhere in sight, Griffin looked at Eve, who gasped at him, finally noticing the bruises.

“What happened?”

“A tussle with an idiot today. I’m fine.”

She brushed a tender hand across the red mark on his cheek. “You look terrible.” Then she pulled him inside, pointing to the couch. “I’ll grab you some ice.”

“I’d like to take a shower. My eye is fine.”
