“Who is that?”

Opening my eyes, I stared up at him glumly. “A dealer from my old neighborhood. Axel was working for him. He said if I didn’t get him the money, he was going after the kids.”

“Do you know where he lives?”

I nodded.

“Then take me there.” He grabbed the collar of my shirt and steered me down the sidewalk.

“Now?”

“Now.”

MISHA

I drovein silence while Marek talked, giving me the whole sordid history with Alonzo and how he and two of his brothers both fell into working for him and his gang, the Neon Kings. Marek got out when he moved out of Colomb but Levi and Axel didn’t learn from Marek’s mistakes. It cost Levi his life and almost cost Axel his. I’d be damned if Marek got ensnared by that shit a second time.

“What are you going to do?” Marek asked as soon as I turned onto Alonzo’s street. “You can’t go in there and talk to him, Misha. He’s not like you. His fucking guys will shoot you the second you open your mouth.”

“I’m not going there to talk.”

“You can’t kill him! He’s a different kind of untouchable. Even the cops don’t fuck with him because he’ll burn their houses down with their families inside!”

My gaze slid to his, an eyebrow arching. “No one is untouchable. You hear me? I’ve killed men surrounded by an army and I’ll kill this piece of shit, too.”

“It was my choice, ok? Mine! Just let it go!”

“Doing something with a gun to your headisn’ta choice, Marek. Now which house is his?”

Marek slunk down in his seat, pointing at a green house on the north side of the road. “That one. His car’s not there, though.”

I made a mental note of the address and kept driving. “Where else would he be?”

“I don’t know. He could be anywhere.”

“Where does he conduct his business?”

“The Neon Diner on Franklin. It’s where the Kings hang out—hence the name.”

I made a U-turn in the middle of the road and sped in the opposite direction. “You tell me if you see his people. Any of them. No matter how insignificant.”

“I didn’t want to involve you,” he said quietly. “You’ve already done too much. You don’t need this shit, too.”

“When it comes to you, there is no such thing as ‘too much.’ Understand?”

Shaking his head, he bit his lower lip and turned his face toward the window.

I reached out and snagged his hand, lacing our fingers together in his lap. “I know you don’t believe me but I meant what I said. I will do whatever it takes for you to see how much I love you. However long it takes. I’m not giving up on you.”

“He’ll kill you,” Marek said, his voice hollow. When I stole a glance at him, trepidation was written all over his face. “He’s not Ken, ok? Ken fucks with your money. Alonzo straight up kills you and everyone you care about.”

I gave him a grim smile. “Let me worry about him. You’ve done it for far too long.”

Marek glanced away from me, tipping his chin up toward the windshield. “That’s his car over there. The Lincoln.”

The white Navigator was parked outside of the self-proclaimed Neon Diner, its garish pink and blue lights blinding even in daylight. Through the wall of glass windows, I made out a group of men I could only presume were Alonzo and a good chunk of the Neon Kings. The thick chains around their necks and guns tucked haphazardly into waistbands were a clue, as was the fact they occupied one corner of the diner like a king and his court while the rest of the patrons were seated as far away from them as possible.
