“You were the key all along.”

“Does that mean you figured out how to keep us alive before your boss more than likely kills us?”

“Yes. As long as everything goes according to plan.”

“Well, then we’re fucked because nothingevergoes according to plan.”

He frowned at me. “You’re American. You’re supposed to be an optimist.”

I made a face right back at him. “And you’re Russian. Doesn’t that mean you’re supposed to be a pessimist?”

“Realist.”

“Whatever. I’m still mad at you, by the way. I just had to tell Bri about Crystal.”

“Is she alright?”

I shrugged. “She’s fine, I guess. But you’re still a dick for even putting me in that position.”

“I thought you said you loved me?” He sidled up to me again, cupping the back of my neck and gazing down at me with that irritatingly calm look.

“I did—and I do,” I huffed. “But that doesn’t wipe the slate clean. I’m still allowed to be pissed about how everything went down.”

“Be as mad as you want for as long as you want. I know how hard it’s going to be to win back your trust but I’m a patient man, Marek. I’m not going anywhere.”

Pissed or not, I wrapped my arms around his waist and buried my face in his shoulder. I wasn’t happy, that was for sure, but I couldn’t blame Misha for Axel’s death any more than I could blame him for snooping through my phone. From the first time we met, I hadn’t madeanythingeasy for him. Yet, he was still there. After all of the vile things I’d said, that I’d done, all the ways I’d tried to push him away… He wasstillthere. If that wasn’t love, I didn’t know what was.

MISHA

Nadia growled suddenlyand slipped off the couch, trotting toward the foyer. A moment later, I heard the soft chime as the elevator hissed to a stop. Aside from the fact it was after midnight, this building was supposed to be one of the most secure in the city, which meant no one should have been able to access the penthouse. Although, I wouldn’t put it past Dimitri to have found a way in like the snake that he was.

Easing off the couch, I followed her, unholstering my gun as I moved.

On the other side of the door, someone knocked.

Nadia barked.

I crossed over to the foyer and tapped the screen mounted into the wall, bringing up the camera outside my door. Whoever it was must have known it was there because they kept their head down and their face angled away from it, obscured by a dark hoodie.

Standing to the side, I flicked the deadbolt open and turned the knob, letting the door swing in. As soon as the man pushed it open the rest of the way, I jammed the barrel under his jaw, sighing the second I saw his face clearly.

Sasha froze with his hands up. “The fuck, Misha?!”

Exhaling another shaky breath, I holstered my pistol again and embraced him tightly. “Thank God you’re here. I’m sorry for all of that.”

He slapped one hand on my back while his other arm crushed my ribs. “Youmustbe in some shit if you called me.”

“They know,” I said, watching the humor drain from his face. “Sergei and Dimitri.”

“They knowwhat?” he asked, his black brows furrowing.

“About me. It’s a long story. Suffice to say, Dimitri has been hounding me for weeks and now he’s finally convinced Sergei, at least enough that I’m no longer trusted. Not to mention, Dimitri has been relentless in his search for you and Roan.”

The muscles along Sasha’s jaw clenched. “What do you need from me?”

“I need your help killing them.”
