If he was surprised, it didn’t show on his face. His icy eyes remained fixed on mine before they suddenly flicked over my shoulder.

I half-turned, following his gaze to where Marek had appeared from the bedroom.

Marek stopped short and glanced between the two of us, obviously taking in Sasha’s overall appearance and the seriousness of our conversation with a wary look of his own. “Everything ok?”

“Who is he?” Sasha asked in Russian, tipping his chin toward Marek.

“The reason I’m in this mess,” I replied truthfully, extending a hand toward Marek and beckoning him forward. “He’s also everything I’ve spent my life missing.”

A smile ghosted over Sasha’s lips before he erased it entirely once Marek was within earshot.

Marek walked forward slowly, still assessing Sasha with an expression that said he was less than impressed by our midnight caller.

“Marek, this is Sasha Vassiliev,” I said, gesturing between them. “Sasha, Marek Sommers.”

They shook hands wordlessly.

“I’ve heard of you. You pissed Dimitri off,” Marek said in what I think was an attempt to be friendly.

“Among other things,” Sasha replied with a smirk.

“So are you here to protect us or what?”

“He’s here to help me,” I answered in Sasha’s stead.

“Help with what, exactly?” Marek glanced between the two of us suspiciously.

“We’re going to kill Sergei.”

Marek’s eyes widened. He glanced at Sasha again, apparently seeing him in a new light. “Are you serious?”

I nodded.

“And Dimitri?” Sasha asked.

“Him too.”

“Excellent.” A lethal smile stretched across his face, looking every bit like the Wolf I once knew.

An hour later,Sasha and I made the drive to Dimitri’s house in near silence. He hadn’t asked too many questions at the penthouse, although he seemed a bit surprised that I already had all of the necessary plans in place.

“Always prepared,” he murmured when I spread out the blueprints, along with photographs of the exterior.

“Never hurts.”

Once we dressed in more appropriate clothing and outfitted ourselves with an array of weapons, I kissed Marek goodbye and we were off.

Rolling to a stop around the corner from Dimitri’s house, we approached quickly on foot, making short work of the pair of guards patrolling the yard. I was a bit surprised that Dimitri hadn’t increased his security at all and more than a little offended he didn’t see me as a viable threat after our earlier confrontation. His arrogance would be his undoing.

“How bloody do you want it?” Sasha asked, kicking the dead man off the end of his knife and wiping the blade on his pant leg as I dragged mine into the bushes.

“Bloody,” I replied. “As messy as we can make it. I want so much chaos at this scene, forensics won’t know where to start.”

He nodded and sheathed his knife before lacing his fingers together, making a foothold for me. I stepped into his hands and he hoisted me up to the porch roof.

Kneeling down, I held a hand out to Sasha. He stepped on the edge of the porch railing and grabbed my wrist, using the side of the house to scramble up after me.
