As soon as I stepped inside, he darted forward, launching himself against me. “Where have you been?” he whispered, rubbing himself against my thigh while groping my cock, trying to start something I wasnotin the mood for. “I’ve missed you. You haven’t been answering my texts. I never know when you’re coming by.”

“I’ve been busy,” I said, catching his wrist and pushing his hand away from me. I met his frown with a stony expression. “And now is not a good time.”

“Are you coming over later?”

“No.”

“Do you want me to—”

“No,” I said quickly, not even wanting to hear the rest of his proposition. “I said it’s not a good time. If you know what’s good for you, you’ll learn to exercise some fucking restraint. Sergei and Dimitri are upstairs right now.”

“Isthatwhy you’re not interested?” Folding his arms, his mouth twisted into a grimace. “Or is there something you want to tell me?”

“Such as?”

“I don’t know. Could have something to do with my fucking clone behind the bar? You never bought me designeranything, let alone a coat worth that much.”

Gritting my teeth, I closed my eyes and took a moment before I snapped. “Firstly, if you needed something, I would have bought it. Secondly, you two couldn’t be any more different. And lastly, this”—I gestured between us—“doesn’t entitle you toanything, let alone acting like an asshole. You knew what this was from the beginning and you knew it wouldn’t go anywhere.”

“Did he get the same speech?”

“No,” I shot back, “because there’s nothing going on with Marek.”

Hayden scoffed and glared past my shoulder. I’m sure he had more to say on the subject but I didn’t give him the chance.

“Just so we’re clear, whatever this was, it’s over. Understand? And if you take it out on Marek, out of some misguided sense of jealousy, I have no qualms in firing you. This has nothing to do with him and everything to do with the fact this was a fucking mistake, which I am now rectifying.” I swept him out of my way with the back of my hand and slammed through the door. If it had been any other time, any other place, I might have been inclined to have a proper conversation with him, but as it stood, I had zero interest in sticking around where Dimitri or his minions could catch us at any moment.

Thankfully Hayden didn’t follow me into the basement. Generally speaking, the employees knew not to go down there for any reason. The cautionary tale about asbestos and horrible lung cancer seemed to keep the oblivious ones away and the smart ones valued their appendages too much to disobey.

In the elevator, I unholstered the pistol from inside my suit jacket and screwed on a suppressor. Thanks to Hayden, what patience I had was gone and the time for diplomacy had vanished with it.

The gun hung at my side as I walked into one of the old storage rooms. Anton, Valery, and Maxim were there with three other men on their knees, bound and bleeding.

I looked at Valery, raising my eyebrows in silent question.

“They all gave different names,” he replied flatly in Russian.

“Again?” I couldn’t help but sigh, gripping my gun tighter.

Maxim nodded behind him, backing up Valery’s statement.

“And phone numbers?” I asked.

“Eduard is running them down.”

“Good.” Hopefully that meant the night wouldn’t turn out to be acompletewaste of our time. I stepped up to the farthest man on the left and raised the pistol to his forehead. A softpewsounded. Blood sprayed out of the back of his head, regrettably coating Anton’s shoes. As their associate crumpled to the floor, I faced the remaining two dealers, switching to English. “Would either of you like to change your answers?”

They shook their heads quickly, eyes wide.

I exhaled a breath that was meant to be calming but ended up sounding more like a growl.

The second and third dealers suffered the same fate before I turned to my men, trying not to scowl at them for things that weren’t their fault.

“Bring me the next three, and make it fast,” I said, unscrewing the suppressor and shoving the gun back in its holster. “I am tired of getting the runaround with these fucking people.”

“What do you want us to do with them?” Valery asked, nodding toward the bodies.

“Dump them in rival territories,” I replied, peeling out a couple of hundreds from my wallet and passing them to Anton as I headed for the door.
