I pantomimed jerking off.

As soon as she got it, she gasped and smacked my arm, wrinkling her nose. “That’s gross!”

Despite the throbbing in my head, I laughed harder.

What a fucking night.

The soundof the elevator chiming got my attention, along with Nadia jumping off the couch and darting to the door with a low growl. I slipped off the kitchen stool and followed her, opening the door as Marek and Sveta stepped off the elevator, arm in arm.

They both practically jumped out of their skin and froze in place. Maybe it was the time of night and they simply didn’t expect anyone to be awake. Or maybe it was the fact it wasmecatching them… doing what? Walking off an elevator? With their arms linked? Their clothes mussed? And a swollen cut on Marek’s cheekbone…

“What are you doing here?” Marek asked. I couldn’t quite tell if his tone was laced with irritation or if he was tired. With him? Probably a bit of both.

“Checking in. I let the sitter go home early,” I replied, sliding my gaze to Sveta and shifting to Russian for the truth. “Why is he bleeding?”

“Some asshole punched him outside the club,” she replied, tucking her hair behind her ear. In doing so, I caught a glimpse of an abnormally bright blue color on the pad of her finger.

My hands clenched inside my pants pockets, mirroring my molars as they ground together. “Why?”

“They were bugging me all night. He stepped in.”

“Where are they now?”

She gave a small shrug.

“Do you know who they are?”

Another little shrug and a shake of her head.

“K. You two have fun with whatever this is,” Marek said, gesturing between the two of us. “Catch you later,” he said to Sveta, tipping his chin up as he stepped away.

“Thank you,” she said in English with a smile.

“Is that pepper spray?” I asked, looking pointedly at the blue mark.

She glanced down at her hand and nodded.

“You’re not hurt?”

“Nyet.”

“From now on a car will take you home. Yes? I’ll tell Kirill.”

Her smile returned and she nodded. “Thank you.”

I waved a hand toward her apartment, dismissing her as I returned to my own.

Closing the door, I walked back to the kitchen to find Marek in the spot I had been occupying earlier, a bag of frozen peas pressed to his cheek. Nadia was at his feet, panting and looking for attention, which he minimally provided by scratching her head. So it wasn’t just people he had a hard time opening up to…

I carried my mug to the sink and poured out the now-cold tea before crossing back to him. “Want me to look at that?”

“Do you moonlight as a paramedic or something?” he asked, letting the bag of peas plop on the counter.

“I do have emergency medical training, yes.”
