He nodded. “And besmirched your reputation. Don’t forget that part.”

She laughed. “Not to mention correctly used the term skedaddle in a sentence before doing it.”

“See? I’m perfect—a non-serial killer with a good vocabulary who can breathe fire and make you s’mores.”

“What more could a girl ask for?” Delaney said, laughing. “I don’t even know what all I don’t know about you, but I do know you make me laugh and make me feel expansive and that the universe has just given me a huge gift. Just promise me one thing?” He nodded. “If you’re not real, and you’re just spouting bullshit, don’t be lying beside me in the morning when I wake up.”

“Are you planning to have me lying in your bed when you close your eyes?”

“I think it’s a definite possibility, which brings up the safe sex discussion. I’m clean and on the pill.”

He laughed. He couldn’t help it. “Of all the in-your-face people I’ve ever known, you are the most in-your-face and the most charming. I’m not on the pill, but I am disease free.”

He couldn’t help but remember Falkor had said the same thing, thinking there was no way he could impregnate Kessily that first night they were together, and yet he had.

Tevryn could see their lives stretching out before him. He knew she could glimpse it as well. She wasn’t ready to believe, but at least she was ready to believe in the possibility and for the first time, Tevryn truly understood what they were fighting for. The Shadow League didn’t know it, but they had just acquired their deadliest enemy.

Chapter 7

Delaney

They ate dinner and Tevryn managed to make her talk more about herself than she ever had. He wasn’t as interested in her accomplishments as he was in what motivated her, what she dreamed about, what frightened her. And she told him. It was the easiest thing she’d ever done. They’d ordered one appetizer, a soup and a salad, two different entrees and a single dessert, and then shared them, often feeding each other.

When they’d finished, they walked back to Tevryn’s SUV, and then Tevryn headed back to pick up Delaney’s vehicle. As he started to slow down to make the turn into the grocery store’s parking lot, she said, “Don’t. Let’s just go back to my place. My room is on the main floor and Lucy’s is up in the far corner of the second. She’ll never hear us.”

He pulled into the lot and stopped by her SUV. “You don’t have to sleep with me tonight, Delaney. Like I said, we’ve got all the time in the world.”

“Don’t you want to have sex with me?”

“More than I’ve ever wanted anything in my life. What I don’t want is for you to wake up tomorrow morning with any doubts or regrets. Remember, I’m the guy who wants you to tell our grandchildren that your husband for more than fifty years knew how to treat you right.”

“I don’t know what to think of you,” she said, sitting back. “One minute I think you’ll jump me as soon as we get in your SUV, and the next I’m not sure if you want me even half as much as I want you.”

He took her hand and laid it directly over his throbbing cock. Well, it certainly felt like he wanted her. He was willing to give her the choice, and she believed him when he said he would accept her decision with no malice and no negative consequences. She gave his hard package a small squeeze.

“I believe you,” she said quietly. “I believe most of it and want to believe all of it. But mostly I believe if I can’t convince you to fuck me, I’m going to need to masturbate and take a cold shower. And I’d much prefer hot sex with you over a—well, over just about anything.”

“Even freshly made s’mores.”

That made her laugh. “Maybe, but then I haven’t had sex with you yet. How about if we try it out, and I’ll let you know in the morning?”

“Fair warning, Delaney Pierce. I’m going to do my damnedest to convince you to spend the rest of your life having hot sex and s’mores with me.”

She leaned over and kissed him. “I’m pretty damn sure that you’re not going to have to work too hard.”

Tevryn growled low and she could almost feel the strength of his arousal wash over her and make her body come alive in a way it never had before. “Tell me where I’m going.”

Delaney directed him to her house. They parked his SUV next to Lucy’s and made their way up to the kitchen door at the back of the house.

“This is lovely, Delaney. Is this the kind of home you want?”

She nodded. “Either something like this to restore, or something angular with lots of glass sitting on the lake.”

“Can we find something like this on the lake?”

“Probably, but even the ones that will need a lot of renovation won’t come cheap. Housing prices are going up by leaps and bounds.”

Tevryn grinned. “Then we’d better start looking.”
