Samuel saved me and offered hope.

Showed me a new life and happiness.

It’s my turn to help him.

Grabbing my phone from the bedside table, I send Dana a text.

We’re coming to visit you soon. Looking at accommodation and flights now!

Then I search for holiday homes in the Daintree Rainforest.

I’m lost to images in the rainforest when he stirs beside me.

“Morning,” he whispers, then leans over and kisses me. “What time is it?”

“Almost six. Go back to sleep if you’re still tired,” I say gently.

“My parents fly out today. I should get up and spend time with them this morning.” He glances at my phone. “What are you doing?”

“Looking for holiday homes in the Daintree.” I give him a sideways glance to check his reaction.

There’s a tell-tale dent between his brows. “For when?”

“As soon as possible. It will be good for you. Best you give me the dates between tests so I can arrange a private getaway.”

He pushes up on his elbow. “Eden, I see what you’re doing here, and as much as I appreciate it, I’ve made up my mind. I’m going to Peru for a couple of weeks. Then I’ll be back. It’s the only way for me to find answers.”

“It’s not theonlyway,” I state. “You’re not even considering new options or even another place where we could be happy.”

He shakes his head as though I’m not making sense. “Another place?”

“Yes.” I scramble to sit up and show him the houses on stilts perched on the side of a mountain and surrounded by rainforest, some overlooking the ocean. “How beautiful are these? I could imagine us living there.”

“Living there?” His forehead furrows. “How? What do we do for income? And do you want to sell this house?” he asks, exasperated.

“No, of course not. Maybe we could divide our time. Or even have a home for getaways when you need a break.” I shrug. “We’d find work. Please trust me on this. You’d love it there.”

“I…” He shakes his head again. “I can’t keep up, Eden. I thought you wanted me to live here with you and be close to your family and friends. If none of it matters, why did you want me to come here?”

“If you remember correctly, youbloody sent me home without a choice,” I snap. “I was happy as long as I was with you. You’re the one who emphasized the jungle was too dangerous for me. You were right, but it was also too dangerous for you. And this place doesn’t have as many risks. The homes are surrounded by the beautiful rainforest as well as creature comforts for modern living. It’s perfect.”

Samuel rolls onto his back and covers his eyes with an arm. “What about work? Do I continue my studies from there? Is a hospital even close?”

“Do you want to continue your training?” I murmur. “Are you enjoying it? Because from where I’m standing, the night you collapsed also stemmed from overworking.”

He stares at me for a few seconds with a look I’ve seen through his charade.

“Please trust me on this.” I lean over and kiss his lips.

He wraps an arm around my waist and guides me on top of him. “I do trust you. It’s part of loving you. But if we spend a few days there, and it doesn’t resonate with me in the way you hope for, then you must trust my instinct and allow me to go to Iquitos and see a shaman. Alone.”

“Alone?”

“I need to focus on healing and not be distracted by anything else.” He takes my face in his hands. “I want to be the best husband I can for you.” He then kisses me, and our tongues tease with the passion capable of turning me into liquid lust. My heart beats so fast and, in a way, beats only for him.

“After the last time, it scared me. Why are you so desperate to return?”

“You know why, Eden. I need extra help beyond what modern medicine can offer.”
