“Monkey man?”

“Tarzan. King of the Apes,” she continues. “Lives in the jungle.”

Samuel’s brow tightens.

“He gets it, Ames.” God, she’s blonde. I shake my head. Not helping.

“We’ve missed him, that’s all.” She hugs him again, and by Samuel’s expression, he doesn’t know how much my friends adore him because they have listened to me for months. They know what it means to have himhome.

We find a table by the window overlooking the ocean.

“It’s good to see you again,” Yasmine chimes. “How are you enjoying Adelaide so far?”

He glances at me. “It’s a pretty city… only I asked Eden to slow down. She was adamant about showing me every sight in a single week.”

My friends chuckle.

“It’s not the jungle, but it’s nice.” Yasmine smiles at Samuel and tucks a dark ringlet behind her ear. “Have you heard from Michael recently?”

Oh shit. They’re diving straight into questions.

I signal to the server and ask for a bottle of rosé. “No, not for many months.”

He glances at me.

I give a subtle nod to go on.

“I know he was an asshole in Peru…” She turns in her seat so she’s facing Samuel. “We’ve been chatting again. I’m going to meet up with him in a few months.”

Samuel’s eyes widen. “To do what?”

The server returns and fills our glasses. Samuel refills his glass with water.

“Ayahuasca. You know I’ve always wanted to try it,” she says more to me.

My eyes meet Samuel’s, and I signal for him to intervene.

“Then you need to prepare in the long term. For a start…” he inclines his head to her glass of wine, “… can you give up alcohol?”

Yasmine slides her glass toward me. “Done.”

Samuel folds his arms over his chest and straightens his back. “If you’re serious, I have a diet to follow. You need to adhere to it to give your body a chance to prepare. It’s like a detox and promotes the benefits of the tea because you’ve already cleansed.”

“You were going to advise her not to take it,” I whisper.

“Yasmine is a strong woman. No matter what we say, her heart desires this. Her spirit calls to her. I can offer the best advice to keep her safe. With or without our approval, she’ll do this.”

“With Michael,” Amy mumbles.

Yasmine’s eyes sparkle. “You know he’s apologized to me several times. He’s back to the same guy I met in Rio.”

Samuel’s expression remains reserved. “Michael… has a big heart. Occasionally, a selfish side of him surfaces. Unfortunately, poor decisions highlight that side.”

“I surprised him when I mentioned you were here. I didn’t give him details of what had happened,” she says gently. “Only how you reconsidered and decided to give Australia a go.”

Samuel stares at Yasmine, and no one speaks for a few seconds, which feels like minutes.

“What did he say?” Samuel’s legs move beside mine. I don’t want him to feel uncomfortable, especially when we haven’t discussed what happened in any detail.
