SAMUEL

Samuel arrives in the city by mid-morning.

After tipping the cab driver, he folds Rose’s stroller and secures her straps. He stands on the footpath and takes a deep breath, preparing his mind to be the man he used to be when he negotiated business in LA.

In a mere thirty seconds, the Porsche salesperson is beside him. “Are you looking for any style in particular, sir?”

Samuel stares down at him momentarily before perusing the room. “Sporty, classy, and also family-friendly.”

“I see.” He holds out a hand. “I’m Gerard, and can definitely help you.”

Samuel shakes a hand. “I’m Samuel. If you have what I want, then I’ll make it worth your while to process the paperwork quickly as my daughter’s patience won’t last all day.”

Samuel loosens the top button of his white shirt.

“Come this way, sir.”

Gerard and Samuel weave around several cars and stop by the glass window beside a sparkling black 911.

“We offer our own child seats to fit.” Gerard smirks as though he has won the lotto. Maybe he has as it piques Samuel’s interest. “Take it for a drive, and you won’t need any more convincing.”

“Can you fit a child seat now?”

Gerard’s hands go to his hips. “You seem like a man who knows what you want. And I’m the man who can make it happen.”

“Stop boasting, Gerard, and show me how good you are.”

Gerard scratches his jaw. “So, you want to take it now?”

“Do I appear the type to mess you around?” They eye each other momentarily.

Samuel slips into the driver’s seat and wraps his fingers around the sporty steering wheel. He closes his eyes and imagines the smooth sound of the turbo engine and how it easily slips up a gear with his fingers controlling every move. A powerful and intelligent car. He remembers it well when driving his father’s car mere weeks ago. He remembers how a small part of him could easily slip back into the past where wealth and power had defined him.

Gerard appears by the open door, standing beside Rose’s stroller. She looks up at him and smiles. “My assistant will fit the child seat now.”

“Perfect. Lead the way to your office, and we’ll settle the paperwork.”

Gerard’s brow pulls tight. “I understood you wanted to take a test drive?”

“No need. I drove the car a few weeks ago.”

Gerard’s smile is almost ear to ear. “All right then. Do you have a color preference?”

“Gerard.” Samuel steps from the car and stands over him. “You must have misunderstood. I want you to fit the child seat immediately so we can tick off the paperwork, and I can take my daughter somewhere fun.”

“I’m sorry, sir, but this car…”

“… will be mine in a matter of hours. I told you I’d make it worth your time. If it’s not done by the time my daughter is bored, then I walk.”

EDEN

A notification flashes across my screen with a text message from Samuel.

What time are you finishing work?

I glance up. It’s already five o’clock.
