Faith snorts and then grins at Eden. “He won’t feel any cleaner for a while even if he scrubs the skin off the bone.”

“You better take off your clothes so I can soak your T-shirt and shorts as well.”

Samuel heads to the bedroom and changes his clothes. Faith is right. When did he become precious? His first reaction was to assess her condition because he’s still not convinced this is normal.

“Are you okay?” Eden asks when he hands her his soiled clothing.

“I feel foolish. Thank you for helping me and for cleaning up the mess.”

“It’s fine, it happens. She has only done it once to me before, and thankfully, Mum was there to help.” She offers him a warm smile. “Join the family. I won’t be a minute.”

“After I wash my hands one more time.”

He hates to admit it, but Faith is right. No amount of soap, water, and meticulous scrubbing made him feel any cleaner.

He heads into the kitchen and takes his seat at the table. “I’m sorry for upsetting morning tea.”

“You didn’t upset me,” Jake says and smiles.

“Sam, do you have photos or anything since I missed everything while in quarantine? I was so out of it.”

“I do, but—”

“Faith gets to call you Sam?” Eden looks at me wide-eyed.

“And doc.” He rolls his eyes. “She’s not someone I’d correct.”

His comment causes laughter around the table.

“Sam’s a quick learner.” Eden winks at me.

“Guys, I suffer from FOMO, and knowing you’ve been here for three weeks and I’m not sitting at the table hearing your stories and learning about my aunty has tortured me.” She looks past Samuel to the lounge room. “Seb, turn the TV down. I’ll not ask you again,” she warns.

“I told you Samuel has barely discussed it yet.” Eden reaches under the table and squeezes his hand.

“There were photographs, right?”

“It’s fine,” he murmurs. “I can get the photos and show Faith and Jake.”

“I’d like to see them again,” Eden adds.

Eden had promised her family to make extra copies, only it completely slipped her mind while showing Samuel around the city.

“He bought a house?” The surprise in Faith’s voice projects to the bedroom, where Samuel is searching for the pictures. He heads back into the room and hands Faith the images.

“I hear congratulations are in order.”

“Thank you.”

“Eden is a better woman than me. No way would I allow Jake to buy a house without me checking first.”

“Eden trusts my judgment, and I base my decisions on what’s best for them.”

Faith’s gaze lowers to the first image. “Well, we know she trusts you after running away from home to live in the jungle whilepregnant.” She lifts her gaze to meet Samuel’s momentarily before concentrating on the pictures.

“Faith,” Eden says gently.

“I’m sorry. I know she trusts you.” She turns the image around. “Can you tell me who this is?”
