There’s more small talk, especially about their business-class flight and the sights of Sydney. Samuel also talks about the places he hopes to visit.

All news to me.

Samuel begins to boast about Rose. The conversation doesn’t last before his father asks him about his work.

Our meal arrives, and we eat out on the balcony.

I carry Rose inside to bathe her and put her to bed.

By the time I return, Samuel is in the kitchen with his parents.

“Well, it’s only Monday, and I have a big week ahead of me. I’ll see you all tomorrow night.” He smiles at me. “No doubt Eden has plans to show you around Adelaide.”

“Is there anywhere in particular you wish to visit, or do you want me to take you on a mystery tour?”

“I recommend the mystery tour,” Samuel jokes.

“We could discuss it in the morning,” Caroline suggests. “Perhaps have one day with Rose before we roam the countryside.”

Adelaide is hardly countryside. And only one day?

Samuel explains they have their own living area off the bedroom so if they can’t sleep, they’re welcome to use it as they won’t disturb us. He gives them the code to our keyless front door. His father mentions how they have adapted to the time zone, thanks to sleeping comfortably on their flight.

“I have also arranged for our cleaner to visit daily,” Samuel adds.

What?Since when do we have a cleaner?

He doesn’t look at me.

“She has a code to the door and will visit around ten every morning.”

My jaw drops.

I glance around the room. The house is clean and tidy—I manage it fine.

Samuel kisses his mother’s cheek then places a hand on his father’s shoulder. “I hope you’re comfortable here. I’ll see you tomorrow night.”

Why wouldn’t they be comfortable? It’s a freaking amazing house.

“We have a wine fridge in the kitchen if you need a little something to help you sleep,” he says mainly to his father.

“Rose has me up early in the morning, so I’ll head to bed as well. Have a think about where you would like to visit. I recommend the wineries… only a short drive from here.”

“I’m interested in seeing the hospital where my son works.” Christopher turns to Caroline, and she agrees with him.

“Sure. Just prepare a list.”

I follow Samuel up the stairs and into the bathroom. He squeezes toothpaste on his brush and ignores me standing beside him.

“Since when has my cleaning been insufficient?” I fold my arms over my chest.

“It’s something you don’t have to worry about. You have enough with Rose, especially now my parents are here.” His gaze remains on his reflection while cleaning his teeth.

Leaning forward, I force him to meet my gaze. “You invited a stranger into our home and gave her the code to our door, and what, the security alarm?” I ask, disappointed.

Samuel leans over, rinses then wipes his mouth with the hand towel. “Joan isn’t a stranger. She works at the hospital and needs more work as she’s a young single parent.”

“So, you can account for her because of a few conversations. Jesus, Samuel, this is our home.”
