“Oh, you mean noontime?” She leans in and kisses him. “Some habits should never be lost, especially those that bring you joy.”

“You bring me joy.” He pulls her hand so she lands on the bed, and this time he gives her a long, lingering kiss, showing Eden how much he has missed her.

Eden breaks the kiss and places a hand on his cheek. “Are you ready to go home?”

He leans his forehead to hers. “Yes, please. I can’t wait to get out of here.”

“It’s not fun being on the other side of your work, is it?” She squeezes his hand when he shakes his head. “To be honest, I was coming here to take you home regardless. You need to be with your family. So, they were going to have a fight on their hands today.”

Samuel’s body buzzes with pride at how Eden would fight his work colleagues to take him home. “Did you mention this to my father last night?”

“Oh, I mentioned quite a few things to your father. To my surprise, he listened, but I think he realized he’ll inherit a stubborn daughter-in-law.”

“Our wedding is something else I want to discuss. I hoped we could have a small wedding while my parents are still here.”

“Samuel.” She leans in and gives him another kiss. “All that matters is you focus on getting better. Our wedding can wait, and I’m sure your parents will return whenever we decide the time is right.”

“The time is right. In fact, it’s never been better.”

EDEN

Convincing Samuel to rest is difficult.

All morning I’m reminding him to play with Rose and leave other things to me.

Caroline and Christopher arrived in Uluru and already sent through photographs. Samuel reads the comment under each like a documentary account of their experience.

My phone buzzes with a call from Dana.

“Hey.”

“Hey, Edes. How are you? How is everyone?”

“All good.” I glance at Samuel and decide not to mention his hospital stay right now. “Rose turned one during the week.”

“I saw Faith’s photos on Instagram. She’s grown so much, I can’t believe it.”

“She has. I haven’t forgotten to book a visit. I have a few things going on. How is Cairns?”

“Fabulous. I want to take you to the rainforest. It’s so beautiful, and it reminds me of when you visited the Amazon.”

“Right. I’m on my way,” I joke, only I’m staring at Samuel thinking how he’d love it.

“There are homes set in the thick of it and a stone’s throw to the beach.”

“What?”

“Don’t get too excited as you can’t swim all year round because of the stingers and crocs.”

I laugh.

“I thought it too good to be true. No, seriously, the Daintree is something you must experience because…” she pauses. “I noticed Samuel wasn’t in the pictures on Instagram.”

I lower my tone. “No, he was in the hospital having some tests. I’ll tell you about it later. Could you please send me some links to the accommodations?”

“Sure, but please stay with us in Cairns, and I’ll organize the accommodation in the Daintree. I’ll send links so you can choose where you’d like to stay.”
