Knock. Knock.

I wait and listen.

Just when I turn to walk away, the door opens slightly. He has a towel wrapped around his waist.

What if he is with someone?

This is such a dumb idea.

Franklin opens it all the way. “Penny.” He runs a hand over tousled wet hair.

“Are you expecting anyone?”

He raises a brow and turns, leaving the door ajar. I follow him inside, locking the door behind me. Laptop screens glow at the back of the room. Scribbled notes on paper are scattered on the desk alongside a whiskey bottle.

Instinct tells me to stop. “Am I intruding?”

His cells buzzes, and he holds up a finger while he answers, “Tell me some good news.”

A slow grin creeps across his face. His hand rests over his stomach as though it’s relieving pain. “About fucking time. I’ll wrap this up tomorrow when I’m back in the office. Get some sleep.”

He ends the call and glances up with a relieved expression. For a change, there is no dent between his dark brows.

“It seems I have something to celebrate. Answering your question, no, you are not intruding. In fact, your being here is perfect timing. I don’t want to celebrate alone.”

“You could go downstairs. They’ll be partying for a few more hours.”

He takes a step closer to me. “As could you, but you chose to come to my room because…”

I let out a sigh. “I needed to see you again and say goodbye.”

Ever so lightly, his fingertips dust over my cheek. The heat radiates through me as though there is magic in those fingers. He can excite me sexually and give me the best damn orgasms of my life, but the warmth of his hands reminds me of Reiki. He could heal me with a light touch thanks to the heat emanating from him to me.

“Do you need more of last night?” he asks.

I scan his beautiful face.

Is that what he thinks? I’m here for sex?

His eyes darken as though remembering all the things we did. I shake my head to dispel the thought of us together as though it was what we both needed to mend our hearts. Maybe it was. Until last night, I didn’t know what I’d been missing in the bedroom. He made my body sing like a freaking opera singer.

Do I want another night like that?

“I just wanted to seeyou,” I reply softly.

He lifts one eyebrow, and I sense those brows have a personality of their own. In just two nights, I’m reading his expression. It’s giving me clues as to what is going on behind those beautiful brown hues.

I walk to his window and stare out at the snow coating the ground. I should be grateful the storm passed farther north, and we can get home without interruption. Yet the thought of Franklin and me stuck in a hotel together for another day or so sounds perfect, and I’m disappointed we can catch our flights on time.

“Are you happy for us to part ways and not see each other again?” The words trip out of my mouth, and I stare at the glass showing his reflection behind me.

I expect him to rub the back of his neck or chest and flinch to show he is uncomfortable with the question. Those dark eyes meet mine in the reflective glass. His feet are planted on the carpet, and there is no rocking back on his heels. His poker face is set so I spin around.

“You have your business-like expression on.”

His brow flinches.

“And this isnota business proposition.” I sigh. I’m ogling his broad chest, those rounded biceps, and—
