“Morning,” I whisper. “Sorry, I was a shit host.”

She offers half a smile and licks her lips. “You’re in my bed.”

“Because you weren’t in mine.”

She stares at me as though waiting for me to say something. “If you like this bed, then it’s yours for whenever you stay over.” I roll onto my back to give her some space.

She lifts the covers and frowns. “You’re almost naked.”

“Because I was sleeping.”

She grins. “You sleep naked?”

“Always, but I kept my underwear on for you.”

Penny is smiling. I follow her gaze to my hips and the bulge in the blanket. It’s morning, and I’m beside Penny. No apology.

“If I were to accept your contract, and I worked late on weekends, the offer of this room stands?”

I nod.

“If I hire you, then the house is yours to style in whatever way you choose. I’ll draw up a contract.”

Her eyes flick over mine. “What if you pay me as we go? You might not like some of my ideas and…” she bites her lip, and I home in those lips, wanting a taste, “… we could have a disagreement.”

Her concern is not only about business but also whether we fight or become involved, so I answer with, “My business decisions are compartmentalized from friendship.”

Her eyes lock with mine as though she’s waiting for me to say something else.

“What’s your favorite color?”

I pull back. “Why?”

“I want to understand your tastes.”

“Green or blue, but that doesn’t mean I want the walls painted in those colors.”

She agrees. “Favorite animal?”

I take a moment to think about it. “Dolphins.”

A smile creeps over her lips. “Is it because dolphins are one of the smartest animals on the planet?”

“I didn’t know that. There is something therapeutic about watching dolphins in the water.”

Penny leans onto one elbow. “Have you been to SeaWorld in San Diego?”

I place a hand on her hip. “Not really a fan of supporting captured animals.”

“I get it, but they also rescue and rehabilitate wild animals that are sick.”

“True.”

“The dolphin show was my favorite as a kid. You couldn’t help being in awe of their intelligence and be hypnotized watching them glide through the water with ease.” She places a hand over mine resting on her hip. “I could take you some time.”

I smile. “You’re making a lot of plans for someone who doesn’t like to have days off.”

“Well, as your new employee, I understand the importance of recreational days for pleasure. I’m helping you.”
