“And you can’t get your head around why he chose me when I’m relatively new at Style Line Designs,” I say in frustration.

Hugh frowns. “Not at all. You’re a natural, which is why I recommended you to my boss.” He glances at Sienna and then Zara. “We care about you, babe. We don’t want you to—”

“I know.” I grab the bottle and fill my glass before passing it to Zara. “If I sense it turning bad, I’ll get my reinforcements to come and save me. Besides, the renovation should only take a month or two, then I’ll probably never see him again.” My heart aches at the thought. “Please don’t ruin the moment when I haven’t been this happy in years.”

Zara reaches out and takes my hand. “I’m confused why he wants you to sleep at his home when he’s not there. It’s not like you’re together-together. It’s freaking weird.”

I chuckle. “It freaked me out a little. But hey, why don’t you all come and stay there with me tomorrow night? Then I could run my ideas for each room past you all.”

Hugh’s eyebrows rise into his forehead. “You want us to sleep over at Franklin Hendricks’ vacation house?” Hugh’s voice cracks. “Um… yes. I’m not crazy enough to turn down an offer like that, especially if it helps my friend sleep at night.”

Sienna frowns at Hugh. “It’s weird, Hugh. We’re sleeping at one of the most influential men in America’s home, and he doesn’t know it. It’s like being sixteen and gate-crashing a party. It makes me uncomfortable.”

With a piece of pizza in one hand, I wave at my friends with the other in an it-will-be-fineway. “Then I’ll ask him if it’s okay?”

Zara is staring at me as though I’ve grown six heads.

I’m waiting for her to say something. She doesn’t, so I have to ask the question, “If he says it’s fine, will you stay?”

“Sure.”

Lily and her boyfriend arrive home, slamming the door behind them.

“Hi.” She waves at everyone before they head into her bedroom, giggling and stumbling as if they’ve had too much to drink.

Hugh stares at her bedroom door. “The entertainment is about to start.”

Zara stands. “I’m still scarred from the last time.”

“Is it that bad?” Sienna asks.

She is the only one of us not to have witnessed the sex screams and moans of my roommate.

“It is.” Hugh stands and tucks his chair under the table.

“Ah.” Loud gasp. “Ah.” Loud gasp. “Ah.”

Sienna places a hand over her mouth.

“That’s nothing,” Zara says, with the biggest smirk on her face. “Wait until—”

“Yeeesss. Yeeesss.Yeeesss. Yes. Yes.Yes.”

Zara snorts a laugh. “There it is.”

“I’m used to it.” I shrug. “I’ll put my AirPods in, and eventually, they tire. It never lasts all night.”

Sienna giggles. “We better go. Nice seeing you, Pen.”

Hugh wraps an arm around her shoulder. “If you sounded like that, our apartment neighbors would be banging on the door.”

Sienna giggles. “Harder. Harder. Give it to me. Give it to me.”

“I’m tapping out.” Zara hugs me before heading toward the door.

“Wait for us,” Hugh calls to her, then he turns to me. “Enjoy your night,” he mocks me. “We’ll chat tomorrow.”

As I stand in the kitchen, the sounds of sex fill my apartment.
