I hear the sigh through the speaker. “Okay, I guess. Frustrated.”

I will take anyone down. She only has to say the word.

“How can I help?”

“Your brother called me back. The contractor had a family emergency. He sent me the contact details of the other workers on his team. So, work should recommence tomorrow.”

“Good. I’m loving all the progress images you’ve sent. You should do a reel or whatever interior decorators and designers do on Instagram.”

“Could I? Would you mind? I mean, it would be great marketing for me if I ever…” She hesitates. “I think you’re going to be surprised when you return. Everyone has been working long hours. You’re going to love yournewMalibu home.”

Home.

“I’m looking forward to it, Pen. And yes, share those pictures. It’s your vision coming to life.”

She sighs a happy sigh over the phone. “I know you’re busy, but will I see you when you come home?”

“You will.”I miss you. “Take care of yourself, Penny.”

She is silent for a moment.

What is she thinking?

“Bye, Franklin.”

My heart fucking hurts, and I hate it.

In a dash, I pack my laptop into my bag. When I’m inside my penthouse, I send another message to Jobe. It’s around midnight in Rome.

I spoke to Penny. Thanks for sorting it out.

Jobe is calling me.

I answer, “You’re up late.”

“Time zones kill me.”

I chuckle. Music plays in the background. “Are you at a bar?”

“No. Damn piano music is supposed to relax me.”

I laugh again. “Did you take a bottle of Michter’s with you?”

“No. I thought I’d get into the wine while I’m here, but their reds don’t go down the same.”

“I hear you. We could also debate whiskey.”

“I’d take any right now.”

“I’m opening a fresh bottle of Blanton’s.” I pour the gold liquid into a small glass. Add ice. Swirl it. “Hear that?”

“A deep cut, brother. Does it piss you off that I’ve spoken to Penny more than you have in the past week?”

“Don’t go there.”

“You’re already showing signs of addiction.”

“You’re way off the mark.”
