Then he licks his fucking fingers clean, and I’m so fucking smitten.

“I love you, Tommy,” he says from his position on the floor, surprising me by using my real name.I’dalmost forgotten my name’s Tommy.

Not Keys. Not Bunnyluv. He called me Tommy.

Fuck. I’m in so deep.

Our beautiful, heartfelt moment snaps when a shrill, incessant beeping starts. I whip the chair around and pound at the keys, but I’m too late.

Someone got past my firewalls.

Someone pinged our location.

Someone knows where we are.

“What’s that?” Neil asks as he gets up and dusts off his knees. “That alarm, what does it mean?"

I rake my shaking hands through my hair. “It means Ramsey’s hackers got through. Fuck. We’ve gotta get everyone out of here.” My fingers fly over the keyboard as I lock all our systems down and wipe any unnecessary data. The stuff we absolutely need goes on a flash drive, which I stuff in my pocket before running a final system wipe. Since my programs kept the Burrow running, everything shuts down: the lights, the A/C, everything. I grab a burner phone from the desk and turn on its flashlight.

“Huh? Keys, what are you talking about? What’s going on?”

Back to Keys. Damnit. The moment definitely evaporated.

Grabbing Neil’s hand, I yank up my pants, stuff his laptop into a bag, and head for the door. “No time to explain. We’ve gotta find Bunny, Doc, and Kendrick and book it. They’ll be coming for us. Fuck, Neil, they could already be on the way.”

I drag Neil through the hallways in search of the others. Finally, after an agonizingly long minute, we encounter three other flashlights in the dark. I recognize the backlit faces of Doc, Kendrick, and Bunny and let out a shaky breath.

They’re okay.

I take Neil’s shoulders and look into his eyes as best as I can in the near-pitch black of the hallway. The light from the flashlight casts an eerie glow on his face. “Listen, Neil, this is important. I need you to pay attention. I want you to stick with Kendrick and Bun. No matter what happens to me, even if we get separated, you stick to them like fucking glue. Do you understand?”

“But—”

“No buts. They can protect you. They can keep you safe, so you stay with them. No matter what.”

Neil opens his mouth, possibly to argue, but the screeching of brakes and slamming of car doors from outside indicates our time is up. I rush with Neil to join the others, and I pant for air as I explain the situation to Kendrick.

“How thefuckdid they get through?” Even in the dim light of the phones, his face burns bright red with his fury.

“I don’t know, okay? It doesn’t matter at this point, anyway. What matters is that we all get the hell out of here before they blow the place up.”

Bunny scowls and runs down the hall towards her room.

“Where’s she going?” I start after her, but Kendrick catches my arm and stops me cold.

“Let her go. She’ll be fine.”

“We should stick together,” I say. “They almost killed her last time they ran into her. I can’t believe you’re just letting her run off on her own.”

“Again, she’ll be fine. Besides, she’d want me to keep you losers alive. So, let’s go.”

Kendrick takes off towards the stairwell, dragging me behind him, and Doc and Neil bring up the rear. We burst through the door at the garage level at a full run, feet pounding on the concrete floor as we make a break for the van. We manage to get within fifty yards of the vehicle before it explodes, throwing us all backwards. My head hits something hard, and that’s the last thing I know as the world goes black.

Chapter 17

Bunny

I just barely get my Summer City Hare gear on and grab my bat when an explosion rocks the Burrow. Since I’m trusting Kendrick to get everyone out safely, I don’t stop to investigate it. Instead, I skip out the fire escape again, ducking as a bullet whizzes past my head and lodges in the brick wall next to me.
