“Yes,” I say through gritted teeth.

“And do you—”

“Yes,” Dante interrupts him.

He gives me a smirk before taking a step forward.

The officiant says, “You may kiss the bride.” Dante leans down, gently cupping my cheek, running his thumb over my skin as his lips press against mine, thus sealing my fate.

I lean into the kiss. My body presses against his, my lips part. I let him swallow every moan. Well, I say “let.” It’s more like he takes it. He inhales me. Sucking on my tongue, and I can feel his erection between us. He kisses us like we aren’t surrounded by other people. We’re practically having sex on the altar, and all I can do is sink into the sensation.

He pulls back, taking my breath away as he does.

“Welcome to the family, wife.”

Chapter 10

Serenity

IwatchDanteonthe other side of the table. We’re having dinner after our wedding. Everyone is seated at an incredibly long table in the magnificent dining room. I see marble floors and paintings on the wall that are so valuable they’re probably bought with stolen money or just plain stolen. The women sit on one end while the men sit on the other. Dante and I are at the head of the table, just at different ends.

Tanya and her sister Claire ogle our rings. A gold band with Bambola engraved on it. I didn’t notice the ring at the time. I was too busy trying not to freak out about getting married.

It replays in my mind like a movie. Dante slips on the ring, then leans down to kiss me. I feel myself plunge a little further into his darkness. It’s like the smoke that surrounds him is pulling me in. A web of violence and lies. But there’s something more to Dante. Not quite morals, but honor.

When we left the chapel, he spoke to his men, making sure they were keeping a watchful eye for the Donnelleys. He talked about me and my protection several times, and I couldn’t help but be flattered by it. When I met him, I thought he was a lunatic, and he is, but I believed him when he said he’d protect me. That’s something I’d never heard before. My father didn’t protect me, and he didn’t even try.

But this man, my enemy, has proven to be more man than anyone I’ve ever met.

But that doesn’t mean I’m letting my guard down. I’ve been eyeing the butterknife for days, considering picking it up and having it for protection. But I chicken out every time. As I look around the table at the dangerous men with guns and the women who look equally as dangerous, I reach out and slip the knife into the dress I changed into after the wedding ceremony and the thousands of pictures we took.

Even though there is a part of me that believes Dante will protect me, I need more than just a belief. Feeling the steel against my hand already reassures me.

Dante stands up and announces that he’s leaving.

“Please, join me, wife.”

I stand up, and he takes my hand. There are whistles mixed with exasperated women slapping their men as we walk up the stairs. We head toward his room, and when we step inside, I head straight for my room.

“No.”

I spin around to Dante’s voice.

“You are my wife, Serenity. You will sleep in my bed from now on.”

“I’m not having sex with you,” I say quickly.

He smiles gently, but his eyes tell a different story. “Sure,” he says, then heads to his bedroom.

I follow him and watch him light candles around the room. I’ve never been here before. The room is dark, and not just because there are no lights on. I mean that the sheets are dark blue, and so are the walls. On the left, a giant set of glass doors lead to a balcony. The moon shines through the glass, illuminating Dante’s face as he lights more candles.

He’s such a serious man. His body might know how to relax, but his face and mind don’t. You can tell by how his brows constantly furrow and his jaw ticks. I didn’t even know we had facial muscles to do that.

I can only imagine what he’s seen. What he’s done.

I’m married to a mafia boss. And he wants me to have his baby.

Oh, Serenity, what a fucking idiot you are. What are you doing?
