“I’ll take him and the guy he came in with,” James piped in. He wasn’t even a server; his ass was the goddamn piano player.

What the fuck is happening?

“I wanna know why you’re getting so cozy all of a sudden?”

Spencer put his palms up to ward off any more questions since he wasn’t going to answer one anyway.

“Please stay focused on your clients, people. We still have a few hours left before the shift ends, meaning there’s a lot more liquor to sell.”

Spencer scoffed and lifted one brow in challenge. “If your customer’s eyes are on me and mine, then there’s something you’re not doing right.”

“Ouch,” Sergio snickered.

His coworkers nodded and went back to their duties. Spencer wasn’t upset that their nosy little inquiring minds would never get answers. Besides, hedidn’t even know if he was going to drop the well-constructed brick wall over his heart and let in a little holiday cheer. Or continue to be the downer he always was.

What should I do, Mom and Dad? I really am tired of being alone.

Spencer shook off his uncertainty and left the back of the house, ready to conquer his fears, or at least try.

He’d almost cleared the hall when he overheard the same coworkers he’d just dismissed huddled in a tight group around the corner, cursing in hushed voices.

They thought they were quiet and no one was listening, but he’d heard every word.

God, Spencer wished he hadn’t heard that.

Cole

Cole didn’t know who the motherfucker was who grabbed Spencer’s arm, but it pissed him off. He could tell by the tension in Spencer’s shoulders and the firm set of his jaw that it wasn’t appreciated.

Cole glared hard at the bastard after Spencer disappeared behind a set of double doors. He held the eye contact until the prick submitted and turned his attention back to his own table.

That’s what you better do, shithead.

Cole wasn’t a person who liked to cause a scene, but his protective side was simmering close to the surface.

That meant it was time for him to get the hell out of there. This wasn’t his type of crowd anyway. He considered people who needed to be catered to in this manner were weak. He’d never been that kind of person.

Quiet and thoughtful, yes, but never weak.

If he wasn’t so intrigued with Spencer, he wouldn’t be signing up for a membership at all.

“I wasn’t gone too long, was I?” Spencer asked, settling beside him.

“Just long enough for me to miss you,” Cole flirted back, putting his arm around Spencer’s shoulders until he noticed the light sheen of moisture in Spencer’s red-rimmed eyes.

Cole cupped his chin and tilted his head toward him.

“Hey, what’s the matter? What happened?”

Spencer lowered his head, and Cole allowed him to retreat into the safety of his throat. He held the back of Spencer’s neck and massaged him with slow, gentle touches.

He turned toward the asshole who’d grabbed Spencer’s hand and gave him a deadly glare. If he was the cause of this, he would pay.

“It’s okay if you don’t want to tell me.”

“I’m sorry. This isnotlike me.” Spencer sniffed and shook his head as if he was being ridiculous. “It’s just this goddamn holiday, fuck. No matter how much I try to ignore people’s nasty comments, I…”

“I understand,” Cole whispered against the bottom of Spencer’s jaw. “I detest this time of year.”
