Erase Noah Baker from her life forever.

Thirty minutes later, she was in the airport once again, waiting for her flight. She bought a paperback novel from the store and a cup of coffee and then found a comfortable chair. Only two and a half hours until her flight. Only two hours until this part of her life was over.

Her chest ached from losing Noah. They’d been so close for so long. But no more. It was over and she would carry on without him.

Opening the novel, she read the first three pages five times, and each time, a tear dropped onto the page. Damn him.

Damn him for making the wrong choice. She was worthy. She was deserving, and they had been perfect for one another. Until now, she’d never realized how badly damaged Noah was from his childhood. She’d known his family life wasn’t the best, but he’d never told her about their screaming.

The fighting.

The way they had made him distrust everything. And yet he’d always trusted her before.

Glancing at her watch, she realized there was well over an hour before takeoff. Once she left this snow-drenched land, she’d be glad.

This morning, she’d awakened to the sun shining brightly into the room. If he’d heard her leave, he’d not said a word. In fact, they had barely spoken all night long. And that was for the best.

There was nothing left to say. Nothing left to go over. They’d said it all yesterday afternoon. It had been abundantly clear that his mind was made up and he’d made a mistake by sleeping with her.

Noah didn’t love her enough to overcome his fears of them working together. And she wasn’t going to give up being a doctor. That wasn’t possible. She’d worked too long and hard to get where she was.

Now she knew the truth and it was time for her to pick up the pieces and move on. Time to go home and start her life over. Time to begin again without her best friend. Time to return home to Oklahoma.

CHAPTER14

When Noah awoke, the sun was streaming through the windows. The snow had stopped. His hand reached over to the other side of the bed and he realized it was empty.

Sitting straight up, he gazed about the room.

Her clothes were no longer hanging in the closet. Jumping up, he ran into the bathroom to find her toiletries were gone.

Yanking out his phone, he called her and reached her voice mail.

“Hannah, call me,” he said.

The room was eerily silent except for the plows clearing the streets. But where was Hannah?

He texted her. “Call me.”

Nothing.

Glancing around the room, he wanted to get out on the road but it was early. They were still clearing the roads and the highway would take a long time.

After getting dressed, he packed up his belongings and then checked the airline schedule. There was a flight to Denver and then on to Houston leaving at noon. Could she be on that flight?

Still no text or call.

Had he been wrong when he’d ended their relationship? Had he been wrong when he got upset when she said he’d broken the man’s rib? It was true. He’d heard the rib crack and winced. But the man was hopefully alive, breathing, and talking to his family.

He called his father. “Son,” he said, “are you getting ready to leave?”

“Not yet. I hear the snow plows clearing the roads and want to give them time to get the highway done. But we’ll be there later today.”

“Is everything all right?”

Could his father hear the distress in his voice? Hannah was gone, and she wouldn’t return his calls. And he was to blame. The thought of her leaving Houston and returning to Oklahoma made his heart pound in his chest.

What did he say to his father? And would his father help him understand? The man had remarried and seemed very happy. Was Noah wrong not to want to work with the person he loved?
