“Yes,” she said, thinking she’d missed his warmth. It had been cold while he was gone.

“Good, get me warm,” he said and once he climbed back on, she pressed her body against his.

Why did it feel so good to be holding onto him? The smell of him was intoxicating and she enjoyed being with him.

The man was a stranger, and yet snuggling against him felt natural. And he’d once again checked on her to make certain she was all right. When was the last time any boyfriend had given her such attention, such care? Never.

Not even when they’d first started dating. So why did she choose bad men? What was wrong with her? She knew what she wanted and yet she seemed to have settled once again. Only this time it blew up in her face.

She was done with men who didn’t treat her right. She wanted someone like Lucas who was intent on taking good care of her.

Her leaning against him, he started the mobile and they slid through the gate. Soon they reached the highway and she gasped at the sight of her car that was nose-first in a snow bank. Sadly the car was covered with snow. She could barely see it sticking out of the white powder.

He turned the engine off and she hopped off the back. Immediately she sank past her knees.

“Wait, let me clear a path to the car for you,” he said, reaching her side and pushing her behind him.

Lifting up the seat, he removed his snowshoes and put them on once again. She didn’t want to see the damage to her car, so she patiently waited, knowing trying to walk would be difficult if not impossible.

Taking her hand, he said, “Walk behind me, hang onto my coat, and watch out for these shoes.”

She stepped behind him, and when he started walking, she watched as he packed the snow. Still occasionally she would sink all the way down. She wore boots, but still the snow was slipping inside, and her feet would soon be wet and cold.

When they reached the car, she gasped. “Oh look. The front end is smashed.”

“It’s not too bad, considering you hit that snowbank pretty hard, but if you’d hit the elk, it would have destroyed your car.”

He put his arm around her and pulled her to him, giving her comfort. She liked the feel of his arms about her.

“I shouldn’t have waited and left on time,” she said.

“It’s in the past. All you can deal with is now,” he said. “Come on, let’s get any personal stuff out of here and your suitcase. You don’t want to leave anything of value in the car.”

The snow began to pick up once again, and they were running out of time. Climbing in, she pulled things out of the glove box. They had thought to bring along a tote bag and she filled it with her personal items. This car had been her first purchase when she graduated college and now she feared for her only means of transportation.

Once she had everything of value, she pulled the note out of her jeans that she’d written along with the roll of tape that Lucas had given her and put it on the window. Basically it told the highway patrol that she was safe and gave the phone number where they could reach her.

With a sigh, she took one last look at her car. “I’m lucky I didn’t get hurt any worse.”

“Yes,” he said. “It’s just a car. Cars can be replaced and you cannot.”

He hugged her to him. “Come on, let’s go. The weather is getting bad again.”

She glanced up at him and gazed into his dark brown eyes. What would she have done without him stopping to save her? A shiver went through her and he pulled her tightly against him.

Licking her lips, she felt safe. He would care for her and watch out for her and, oh, how she wanted him to kiss her.

Gazing at her, his head leaned down and she felt his lips on hers and her world seemed to explode around her. Heat filled her as she leaned into him, letting him take control, his mouth covering hers in a way that commanded her surrender, wanting and needing to feel the comfort he offered.

Suddenly he broke apart from her, his face looked contrite. “I want to say I’m sorry, but I’m not.”

She grinned. “Good, don’t ruin a good kiss.”

He seemed to relax and she realized he’d been nervous. Scared. Last night, she’d been afraid of him, but today, her fears were gone and she trusted him.

“Come on, we’ll come back when the weather clears and dig your car out,” he said as he carried her suitcase. She hung onto his coat and carried the tote bag full of her belongings.

Why had heat spread through her body at the touch of his lips? Why did that kiss feel so right? And why was she thinking of how it would feel to have the big cowboy’s naked arms around her?
