Sammie set her phone down and picked her pint of ice cream. The spoon handle stuck out of it. She was helping me drown my sorrows in gooey, creamy goodness.

“You told him I was here.”

“No, but Asher said he wants your contact information.” Sammie shrugged. “Does that tell you the guy’s in love with you?”

He wanted my contact information, which meant he was in love with me? That was a leap. He probably just wanted to make sure he’d have somebody showing up for work tomorrow.

Sammie slid the spoon into her ice cream and set it aside. “I’m in love with Asher.”

For a brief moment, I was able to forget about my own problems. “Our boss?”

“He’s the one who texted me to ask for your information. We got close on our trip.”

“It hasn’t even been a week,” I said. “Have you guys been seeing each other for a while?”

We were seated at her table, which was next to her kitchen. She’d grabbed the two emergency pints of ice cream she kept in her freezer when she heard I was upset.

“No,” she said. “It’s all new. It happened on our business trip. Asher had gone all his life failing at relationships, but it was all because he hadn’t found the right woman yet. And I’m the right woman.”

She was beaming. Glowing. A woman in love. I was happy for her and battling a raging bout of jealousy at the same time.

“It’s easy to fall into the trap of thinking a guy like that would never fall for someone so young, but it’s not about that. It’s about connecting on a deeper level.”

Maybe that’s how it was with Sammie and Ashton, but that wasn’t the case with me and Trevor. He’d been on the phone, making plans for dinner?—

Wait a second.

“Trevor’s with Ashton right now?” I asked.

Sammie nodded and resumed eating, scooping a generous heap of ice cream onto her spoon as she spoke. “It’s all business stuff. Asher wants to make sure the transition goes smoothly. Plus, he wants to talk to him about me staying on.”

That was good news. “You’re not leaving?”

Sammie shook her head. “Hopefully not. As long as your boyfriend wants to keep me around.”

“He’s not?—”

A knock on the door cut into the silence. My heart skipped a beat. Could that possibly be Trevor? No way he got here this fast.

I looked at Sammie, eyes wide. Here I sat, with my face scrubbed clean of makeup, wearing sweats.

Fuck it. He may as well see the real me.

Smiling, Sammie pushed her chair back. “I’ll get it.”

“Is Janelle here?” I heard a very familiar male voice ask after she answered the door.

I squeezed my eyes closed and willed myself not to faint. That would be embarrassing.

“Yep,” Sammie said. “Come on in. I’ll be in the bathroom.”

She tossed me a smile as she passed by, then I turned in my chair, angling my body toward Trevor, who stood awkwardly just inside the door. He looked completely out of place in this tiny studio apartment.

“You just left,” he said.

I pushed myself to my feet and found my legs were almost as wobbly as they’d been earlier that day. “You seemed…busy. I didn’t want to interrupt.”

Now he looked around awkwardly. He felt out of place here. But I’d never seen anyone more handsome.
